How do you remove the impulse on a IHC H4 Mag? It was missing the gears, and just had the nut threaded in on the end with a couple of washers. Also is missing the rotor.

Thanks. Tried printing it out but it looked to big for the page to print when I did the preview.

I got the mag completely apart. Does it pay to put parts in it? It's missing the distributor gears and distributor rotor, and also the impulse drive. The impulse washers were on there, and the impulse nut was threaded on. The poles are a bit rusty in spots. Can they be Scotch-Brite'd? It also would need a rebuild kit or something along those lines with at least gaskets. Another question I have is what do you normally do to clean everything, and do you blast the parts at all or just put them back in?

It kind of sounds like a parts mag to me. Do not wire brush or steel wool the internal rotor scotch brite would probly work unless its to rusty.Are the pawls worn or the pawl springs there and ok?The dist gear is something that you may be able to find used the rotor hubs are about 20.00 new and yes put at least new points condenser in it and check or have the coil checked . You can bead blast or light sand the aluninum parts but make sure every thing is clean before you asemble. JON

MaybeI found the distributor gears. I took two screws out of a plate with a gasket and removed it, then there was a bigger plastic gear that pulled out, and a smaller gear that was part of the black plastic piece for the rotor. The poles have more surface rust than I thought they did, but it isn't deep pitting. What's there of the impulse has a lot of surface rust on the round plate part of it, and some on two pawls diagonal to each other. Some wear is there on the pawls, but I don't think excessive. Springs are there. There is also some surface rust outside of the shaft seal area. Sorry for the lack of terms, haven't had time to sit down and study on the manual yet, but I plan to tonight.

This is my first mag. I pulled it off of a parts tractor that has a distributor on it. I'd like to put parts in it, but I may lack the tools necessary to fully rebuild it (blasting or cleaning up surfaces on parts).

Yep I have a lot of money in parts pieces and tools. If you had a bead blaster with glass beads you could probly blast the internal rotor butnot the bearing races. And remove the bearing and soak them first. I will be in and out this week then gone for a whole week I guess. If you want to send it to me I will see what I can do for you cheap the cost of sending it to me and giving me a few bucks might be cheaper than buying tools your self. The rust you mention is pretty comon the main thing is not to wire brush anything it might get stuck where you cant see and ruin a bearing. start a new post or email me @ abuckmaster147@wmconnect.com
