Anyone know of a good "substitute" to use for a tach cable? The sheath is fine but the internal wire that runs the tach is broken.
Maybe "re-fabricating" a speedometer cable wire?

I just replaced the cabel on my 450 and found a replacement from an auto shop for around 5-10 bucks.

Using a automotive "universal" spedo cable is a good choice Match up the end configurations. It is possible that you will need to silver solder the original tip on the new shaft. Do not let the silver wick more than 1/4" into the exposed cable. The housing may have rust in it (even if it looks good). Where it is broken may not be near where it is rusty. Use the old cable on a variable drill to clean the housing (fuzz the strands of the broken end just a little and use it with PB blaster to lightly ream the housing). If rust in quantity comes out the housing is probably not worth using. Use graphite spec. Ford chassis grease (it is black) on the cable to limit further wear. put it on the new cable as it is fead into the housing, and run it in from both ends to get grease through the tube. Use this on a brand new housing/cable as well. they may not be lubed from factory well enough to last. Good Luck

Thanks jossette... 'preciate the info...

I hear ya' Paul - I've check around and even $44.00 just seems a little steep to me for a tractormeter cable. Thought about hitting the junk yard and "fabricating" my own. Case-IH is way out of line with their price, IMHO...
(Of course, I'm still living in the day when a nickel could get you a candy bar!!!)
