It sucks that the EPA doesn't require manufacturers to test and rate their 3/4 ton trucks.

What are you getting for mileage without the trailer? Please also specify 4x4, 2x4, extended cab, long bed, etc..

Sorry to intrude Cowman, your post inspired me to ask a similar question.

I had a dodge cummins 1995 3500 flat bed 5 speed 357 rear 2 wheel drive. 20 mpg MT 14 mpg loaded pulling a 24 ft. flat bed or a 8x24 steel cattle trailer loaded. Not bad huh. Well I traded for a 2005 ford 6.0 power stroke auto 4.10 rears 4 wheel drive If I'm lucky I get 10 mpg mt. I went to ford they told me that was common on the 2005's I know of about 5 more people in this area that gets the same thing. they also blow something called a "CAC hose" off This is also common says ford. Oh by the way the dodge had 350,000 Mi. on it and the guy that got it won't trade with me. What can I say.

'03 2500HD Allison 8.1L ext. Cab 4x4..... ..Trailer with tractor 9-10. Depending on if A/C is on. Empty 60/65 mph up to 15 according to the computer... oh yeah I Hypertech reprogrammed it... I hauls the mail man i'm tellin ya its great... and with $2.50 Diesel Fuel and $5000 engine packages i'm coming out ahead

I have an 04 GMC Sierra 2500 Crew Cab 4X4 6.0L. Just took a trip from St. Louis MO to Charleston SC pulling a small boat (Aprox 2000#) Running at 80MPH I averaged 12.5-13mpg. If I did 65mph I got as good as 14.7 on the stretch between Augusta GA and Charleston. Empty fuel economy is normally just over 16 highway, and 11 city, somewhere around 14.5 on overall average. I figured I had better speek up for the GM people out there. All the Ford talk is killing me.

Mileage is obviously impacted on how you drive. Mileage is also impacted by the amount of wind that you break. Trucks are not very aerodynamic. The big tough exteriors that we crave are like parachutes going down the road. Ever ride a Schwinn Air-dyne exercise bike? The faster you go, the more energy it takes.

My 03 4x4 Sierra with the 5.3 V-8 has the on-board tip computer, which is a lot of fun to play with. It shows on my truck that keeping the road speed below 65 mph, I can encroach on 21 mpg on flat ground on a relatively calm day. 70 & above (which included bucking head winds), it drops to 15-17 mpg.

Caps also suck mileage by about 1.5 mpg at highway speeds. Tannoe covers are the better solution. Tailgtes down or off make little difference. It's the blunt back-end generated by the cap, especially those with elevated rear ends, that causes a vacuum going down the road. Look at an airplane. The trailing edges are never blunt, but feather to a thin edge.

Something else to scare you is that the internal combustion engine is hardly 20% efficient, meaning around 80% of your fuel dollar is leaving the engine in lost heat.

Pete's on to something with the tonneau cover idea. See the link below for how different configurations affect the mpg of a Dodge truck. Interesting how taking the tailgate off made mileage worse while leaving the tailgate down improved gas mileage.

1994 Ford, 7.3 Powerstroke, 3/4T heavy duty extended cab, 5-speed manual, 4X4 with manual lockouts, 4:10 gears. I'll get 14.5 at 75 to 19 at 58 mph with no tail-gate.

My old '94 Cummins has 255,000 no major maintenance, automatic, 3500, 2WD, ran 22mpg for years empty or moderately loaded. Now gets 18-20. Worst I ever got loaded on a long trip was 16, that was uphill to Denver. This don't count idling around a hay field or feeding square bales. I can't keep a gas gauge in it so I check the mileage with every tank because I use the trip meter to keep from running out of fuel.

pld said why he gets good mileage: he baby's it. A heavy foot in a gas engine is the "Oil Company's Delight".

2002 F250 ext. cab long bed V-10 2wd 3:73 auto. Empty on interstate in Georgia I get 15 usually, pulling my 30 ft. 5th wheel camper(7k lbs) I get 10 usually. It's a pulling fool. My 89 Silverado 1500 ext. cab long bed 3:08 gears 350 cu. in. 700 r4 auto gets 21 on interstate at speed limit. Pulling that camper it got 8-9 mpg at 65 mph. Needless to say it is my daily driver.

I drive a 2000 ford super duty, v-10, ext. cab, 4wd, short bed. Under 65 empty about 14 mpg, my M and 3000lb trailer, about 10mpg. 4:30 gears, auto

I have a 2002 Chevy 2500HD 2wheel drive with a 6.0 with 4.10 gears that get 17 mph with the cruise set at 70 with or with out the air and about 12.5 to 13 loaded.

I have a 1997 Ford F-150 with a 4.2L V6, short bed, regular cab, 5spd. Everyone reads that and says you get great mileage. I strugle to get 16 on the highway. If I go over 65 mph to 70, it drops to like 14.5 or 15. I don't want to know what it gets in town driving. So, think it will be the last Ford anyways. Since I can remember, my family has had 8 Ford vehicles. 6 of 8 have had the A/C go out on them, the last my F-150. Just after I replaced it myself, the heater core went out, leaking into the cab. Something like $500 to replace. Good thing I live in Texas.

The 4.2 in a full size Ford just doesn't cut it. the 4.6 V8 has better power and much better fuel mileage. Just like the Ranger, the ones with V6 have always gotten better mileage then the ones with 4 cylinders.

The Chevy 4.3 is a totally differant story.

I have to disagree w/ that. My '97 F-150 reg cab long bed 4x4 w/ the 4.6v8 gets about the same or a bit worse than Cole's. 15 highway and probably 13-14 in town. Put any kind of load on it and probably cut that in half. Worst I've ever had! My old '95 (equipped the same) but w/ the 302 got about 15-16 no matter what.

96 Ford F250 power stroke 3.73 4x4 w/lockouts, 5 speed, standard cab. I almost never run empty, and certainly not enough to check mpg. with my smaller enclosed trailer, 15 to 16 mpg. Big enclosed trailer (read "billboard") 10 to 11 mpg. Also have the same truck in a "90- same mpg.
Best one is my 81 Toyota diesel pickup. 35+ mpg!
Worst is 75 IH 1700 flatbed about 4 mpg (only an 18 gal tank too)
By the way, has anyone else noticed how hard it is to find a "standard" pickup anymore? 8 foot box, regular cab, manual transmission.

My 96 Dodge CTD 2500 4x4 extended cabs get right at 20 empty driving 70 mph. I've never checked it loaded, but think it is about 15 with my 6000 # trailer.

When was the last time you changed your fuel filter? If you have recently it could also be your timing has slipped, which is not unusual.

WOW!! I maintain that the auto trans is to blame on both counts. I have a '98 4X4 cab and chassis dual wheel 3500 with a 5-speed, 4-valve Cummins, and 3.54 gears. It has gotten less than 10mpg ONCE pulling a #6500 trailer and #15000 bachoe in a heavy wind, usually 12 to 14. But I do baby it something fierce, it is the only new vehicle I ever had and I can't afford another one. Lack of power is not a concern. And if you throw all the tools and trash off, which is rare, I have gotten 19mpg on several occasions, but it just won't hit 20. Seems like it weighed about #8300 empty with fuel.

I have a 2003 Dodge quad cab short box 4x4 with the Hemi (Hey, that thing got a Hemi? - got tired of that). It makes up to 15 mpg empty driving at moderate speeds on the interstate in the summer. Otherwise empty it is between 13 and 14 mpg. With my 5th wheel trailer and tractor/tractors on it I get about 9 mpg. Roger

I run a Ford F250SD 4x4 Crewcab with Powerstroke, 3.73 gears and 8' box and get 16 mpg around town/highway empty unless it is raining and then I get 22-23 mpg. Towing a 7000 lb trailer, I get 11 mpg duing 75 mph.

Well it does better then I would have believed it would 1980 chev 4X4 with 4 speed. heavy half 9:50/ 15 tires flat bed and it get 18-20 no matter what I'm pulling. 350 with a 4 barrel but I don't put my foot in to it often. Does lack when pulling a hill loaded but other then that its a mule. By the way it is also Called the mule-2 my first mule sort of got worked to hard one to many times

Old, what modifications have you made to that truck? I have been around several of the seventies and early eighties GM 4X4 trucks, all of them were hard pressed to get even six m.p.g.

Its just one of them that is out of the nrom. I haven't done a thing to it. But and I can't be sure about this, it may have been an automatic when it came out and if so that maybe why I get the mileage. It seems to be geared higher then most 4X4 trucks that I have ever seen.

My 2002 3/4 ton Duramax 4X4 regular cab 6 speed manual got 20 MPG regular driving, not towing. With a heavy load of tractors, 12 MPG. I recently traded for a 2005 3/4 ton Duramax 4X4 with extended cab long bed and Allison automatic. It got about 11 MPG hauling tractors to Lebanon. Looks like it's going to get about 16 MPG not towing. The extra weight of the extended cab and the auto transmission look to cost quite a bit in fuel mileage.

That's Ok. I hardly never drive mine empty but I think around 14, maybe a little better now that it's broken in. 5.7 Hemi 4x4 with 4.10 gears and 5 speed. Still wonder where old gets his 20 mpg gas for his chevy?

I agree I have a 76 1 ton chevy 454 auto 4.10 gears that I just use on the farm now, but when the engine was new 6 mpg M.T. 3 to 4 loaded. I would like to see some more posts on the 2005 6.0 power stroke. Is anyone else having the bad fuel mileage 10 mpg. M.T. 350 super duty ford says this is common. Hard to belive.

You need to talk with a guy I went to High School with. His Dad had Dodges and they always got outstanding gas mileage. When I started driving gov't Dodge pickups, I only got about half the mileage he did.

I don't know where Old gets that mileage, maybe mixed with hydrogen -- I have a heavy foot. Had a 84 Chevy with a 305 4 barrel, 15 hwy, 12 town, 92 GMC 4x4, auto overdrive, 15-17 hwy, 13 or so city, new GMC 4x4 auto, 4.10, 5.3 liter, about 14 so far, mixed driving, I hope for 15 with 70 mph highway, may not get it -- all half tons. The new one runs like a scalded ape (probably not as good as your hemi) My opinion of new 3/4 ton gas, if you have to ask, you can't afford the mileage. Towing with a gas, 1/2 or 3/4 ton, your 9 mpg is good. Haven't towed with my new one, not enough miles, my 92 got about 7.5.

My 72 chev 3/4T get sbout 8.5 on the road enpty and about 7loaded. Has 412 big block, turbo 400 and 4;10 rear end. My 96 Chevy 1T gets 10.1 - 10.6 empty. Has 454 big block, 4L80 tranny and 4:10 rear. Sure wish I got 20 mpg!

I never got good mileage until I got a Dodge with the Cummins.

In '93 when I bought it, the dealer was trying to talk me into a V-10. Nice novelty, but I would not have a Dodge if it were not for the Cummins.

It seems they don't sell the V-10's anymore but seem to still have the Cummins'. I ask about mileage at the filling stations and get lots of 20 and 22's from other owners.
