Well Guys it looks like the end is near. My wife has worked for a company going on ten years now and there have been rumors circulating lately about them being bought out. Me and her rely on her job to an exstent that you could not even start to imagine.Becuase of the medical INS she was recieving and Prescription drug coverage that she had that I rely on. we just got by. Well she got a phone call while we were gone on her Vac trip That the place has sold and over 100 people at her location everybody at her location will be out of a job any time between now and 60 days from now. WHAT A KICK IN THE TEETH. You give over 8 hours aday for that long and alls they can say is here is your pink slip. It kind of looks like there may have to be a sale coming in our future. I grew up on this place and even though its only 40 acres now left this was my small farm and the only place I really ever called home, Even when I tryed the Texas thing at my late teens.This is where I desided to build and raise my Family.I dont know if we will have an auction or just try to sell down and see if we can make things work and pray something comes along with the benifits she had or what . I do know its hard for people our age to get into any place good these days. we are just tired Iron as far as most people think. Well I guess I am done babbling for now My vacation starts tomorow for a week and its my turn to go where I want and do what I want to do wont be riding around looking for deals this year thats for sure.Well have a good week guys and I will update you on whats going to go when we figure out what we are going to have to do. I guess its time to start an invintory moma will probly sh#@ when she sees all the stuff I have acumulated and been hiding in all the sheds. lol JON

Hi Ron. I know you are probably thinking there is no hope but hang in there. Lots of folks are in that same situation and thinking the same demise. The working class of people are being pushed right out the door by those idiot corporations that don't know what an asset hard working and honest people are.
It seems to me that things have really gotten out of hand in the last few years. Medical expenses including perscription, health insurance, fuel, utilities, etc; have become so expensive that just plain living expenses takes all a working family can muster nowadays.
You have a great skill, put it to good use and start your own business. It's not that big a deal. Diversify your business and don't depend on one source of income if possible.
Is your 40 acres all open or is part of it wooded? Sell what tractors you don't really need to work your land with for some quick cash.
If you can't afford health insurance, join the crowd. Buy your perscriptions in generic brands.
Don't throw in the towel if you don't want too.
If you are in need of cash, call Harley and tell him I sent you.

I'll only offer limited sympathy. Those who are used to paid vacations, company paid health care and paid sick leave, etc. have learned to depend on them and miss them when they are gone. That's a shame.

There are those of us who have never had a paid vacation in our life, who've never ever been paid for even an hour not worked, and have paid for fringe benefits for employees we couldn't collect for ourselves.

Now that we can no longer work, we're no longer required to pay double rate for FICA most of the time, except for farm income. Whoda thunk our reduced benefits would be less than our prescription medications. In spite of all we are STILL required to pay FICA and income tax on savings we withdraw to live.

Count your blessings, suck it up, and move on!

Been there, you have my deepest sympathy�and prayers. I worked for a fairly large very profitable local company that sold out to some investors. Seems the investors figured that we needed a CEO and other high management people to show us how to make more money and hired about 100 people. Three years later the lay offs and firings started and now five years later they are sized to less then before the sale. Many are hoping that this is as bad as it gets.

There is short term major medical health care available (besides COBRA) for six months at a time. Not the best insurance but affordable. I don�t know if you qualify, but might be worth looking into. Maybe someone local that knows you and your wife needs someone experienced like yourself. One of my neighbors got laid off and started his own business. Maybe there is something missing in your local area that you can do.

What a shame...
Don't sell yourself or your wife short - corporate America is learning that older workers have something the younger crowd does not posess. It's called a "work ethic" and more and more companies are hiring older employees. Why? They come to work on time, don't abuse their sick leave, don't steal them blind, tell the truth and are accountable. And, a college degree cannot substitute for 20 years or more experience.
You are both valuable - act that way and don't forget it. Tell any prospective employer about your work ethic - sometimes they don't see the obvious!!

Well,that is a heck of a note. Been thru that too. Lost a good job due to so called budget cuts. Found out I was too hard to get along with and just worked temp. jobs anyway. Decided to start up my own business. I knew what other contractors didnt want to do and tried to fill that niche. Plus trying to farm about 220 acres. Wife worked part time. We made it but had to take early retirement and get off the farm.

The same garbage has happened to many in my extended family. From US Steel to (now) Maytag, the bean counters have lead us into the weeds.
I believe in your skills. Setting up a larger (internet based) magneto and distributor repair/rebuild enterprise might work well. The expansion might need to include more "species" than red, but the operation is the same, as are many components. From the posts you have gotten, and the positive answers that you provide (without pressure to sell your self) , I believe there is potential there.

Also, check into retraining funds that may be a part of the company change over where your wife worked/s. They rarely post one's options to obtain help in becomming re-employed. Bottom liners like ex-employees to go away.
