This is embarrassing,

Worked 'til dark again last night and fer another hour this morning swapin' the lugs and drive rims on the second wheel. (My day job is really interfering with my play time).

They should both be mounted by this afternoon, but I gots me a hitch that never even crossed my mind.

New tires on the tractor; fairly old tires on the duals. We're talkin' lop-sided here big time.

Oh well, they'll work for this year, I guess. :>(

ALLAN - Duals, especially clamp-on type on the older non-wedge-lock IHC wheels should be smaller in dia. than the main tractor wheel/tire. The larger IHC's (1256/1456) with clamp-on cast centers broke the hubs all too frequently the way it was. The smaller tractors like Your 686 never had wedge-locks available. Reason for the smaller duals is to carry less weight on the dual and reduce the off-set force on the center of the cast wheel. Of ALL the factory duals shipped from FARMALL with new tractors less than 1/4 had tires mounted. Used tires would be dualed up with the new tractor.

What's embarrasing?? That's NOT embarrassing!!
You should've seen what I did!! I was getting ready to... never mind...
(How can it be lop-sided if it's lop-sided on both sides?) : )

Allen,

Don’t worry about the outside tire being smaller. Up here we just run the duals to distribute the weight over a larger area to lessen compaction. I bought a tractor with new tires on the drivers, used on the axle mounted duals but the used tires (same size) had a rolling circumference that was larger than the new ones on the tractor. I had more trouble with rims coming loose than I could keep up with. Finally, I put the used ones on the tractor and the new ones on the duals and that solved the problem. Since I never pulled heavy much without the duals, this worked fine. Smaller on the outside is a good thing…

Yep,

That's my aim; just to keep that weight off the field. I'm up against some pretty tight ground the way it is and I'm trying to lessen the effect.

I just don't wanna see those tire tracks in my crop for the next two months. :>)

So what's wrong with that? No point in having new tires on duals that you'll only use for a short time during the year. Eventually, you'd end up being lopsided in the other direction...

Besides, once you get on soft ground, where you need the duals, they'll kick in and do their job just fine.

Yes Sir,

That's what my neighbor just told me. Word for word.

If they'll just help keep 'er up on top, that's all I need.

Hey buddy that"s what we always ran. Just relegated the old tires to duals when we got new tires for the tractor. Sure they look a little off-sized on the driveway, but you get into the field where you need them and they"ll do their job. Tractor tires sink in a inch or so and then the duals hit and away you go.
