Farmall A - Brakes bad

My 1945 A has bad brakes.
I"d like to replace them but the Service Manual I have doesn"t offer much help except that the final drives have to come off. No pictures.
It does say to "see service chart No. 7.
First of all, this doesn"t look real bad to do but are there any tough spots or special gaskets required. Can I get the parts if I do get to the brakes?
Does anyone have Chart No. 7?
Any help would be appreciated.

Not too bad a job. Get a parts diagram from you dealer, or get a parts catalog for the A and you can see what you have to deal with. Brakes are likely bad because oil has leaked past the shaft seals and gotten on the brakes. Therefore while you have it apart, replace the seals on the shafts at the transmission housing and at the final drive housing as well as renewing the brake bands. If you replace all those seals, you are looking at $150-200 in parts, including the brake bands. Support tractor well and do one side at a time, as things may get a bit tipsy if you take off both rear wheels and final drives at the same time.

I've come up with a diagram and it appears that the entire diff. shaft comes out with the final drive. Is that true?
Thanks for your help.

Yes, the shaft is just splined into the differential and slides right out when you pull the final drive off. Since there is no shaft in the hole, seals on transmission/differential housing are easy to replace. Brake drum must be pulled off the shaft to replace the seals on the final drive. As I recall (please doublecheck the diagram) you remove the cover with 4 bolts on the outside of the final drive and after the brake drum is pulled off the shaft(remove set screw that retains the drum), the shaft comes out the back side through the hole. Don't try to drive the shaft out of the brake drum, use a puller, as there is a key (woodruff half moon I think) that well catch on the seal and bearing race if you try to just drive it out. My experience, the brake drums come off easily.

I re-did the brakes on my A. It is some work to pull off the final drives but there are not any gaskets or seals to worry about. I took the old brake bands to a local brake shop and had them relined. It cost me about $15 per break to have them done.

Did you have good brakes again after doing this?

Go to a case/IH dealer and he should be able to print you out a good picture of the brake system and also give you an idae of what you will need
