My M has been sitting around in the garage for a long while. Started right up but had to shut it right down as the engine ran away. I took the govenor plate off and didn"t see any broken springs or obvious things except, is the govenor housing supposed to be full of oil? Is it likely something is just stuck. Thanks for suggestions.

Thanks all. I sprayed nearly a can of WD-40 on the govenor parts while turning it with the crank to get coverage and cleaned it pretty good it appeared. However it still runs away and won't idle down no matter where the throttle is set. Guess I will have to take the carb and govenor off and clean more throughly, right?

Greetings Mels,

No, the govenor does not have to be full of oil, it is lubed and cooled from a line in which is fed from either the crankcase or the head (don't remember exactly which. My Dad went through this a few years ago. He thought he had a bad springs/bushing. He had also removed the carb, and I explained to him that the butterfly's if not positioned correctly would cause him some problems. He ensured me that they were correct. Any way, the govenor assembly was all gummed and mucked up. Get yourself a can of WD 40 (might need one of the BIG cans that is full) and spray the weights, shaft, etc, and everything else in there down real good and work the weights and clean them. This should get your tractor running like it should be and used to real quick. You may also want to change the oil in it soon afterwards. The WD40 will be going into the crankcase, and not sure if this is what you are wanting to run that engine on for long.

Hope this is of some help, and Good Luck with your task.
Jim

The governor is oiled intermittantly from the crankcase. The line that goes to the front of the cylinder head is nothing more than a part of the crankcase ventilation system. You can actually run the engine briefly with the cover removed from the governor and not lose too much oil.

It is not supposed to be full of oil. When you remove the cover, there should be very little or even no oil in the housing. I think you need to remove the entire governor assembly and do a thorough cleaning and inspection.

We had a M that did the same thing. We found out the the flyweights were stuck and the motor went freewheeling. One of the pins that hold the weight broke and got jammed causing some damage and a replacement governor. Hope yours isn't so bad. just my .02 cents worth of info.

Thanks. I will double check but the flyweights are free to the touch and appear like they should be working.
