The chassis serial prefix for the U6 is UBK, the engine serial prefix, under the #1 spark plug, is UBKM. I assume (my "assumptions" are usually wrong), that IH upgraded the engines when they changed tractor models, thus the last version of the engine would be 281 cu in, rather than 248 cu in. If it is other than 248 cu inch, the displacement should be cast into the rear right side of the block. And, that engine should have been discontinued in 1958, and replaced by the same 6 cylinder engine that is in the Farmall 560. What is in a 1971 non-IH product, I don't know -- someone else can clear this up, as this is pure speculation. The HP of a U6 could be slightly higher than an M, as I think they were rated at a higher rpm. I imagine the head and internal engine parts are the same.

Colekicker has had experience with them, I haven't, except for one my dad had in the 40's which I don't remember anything about, so listen to him.
