Has anybody out there used JB Weld to fill seal grooves on slow turning shafts? The bull pinions on my super c have a preety good groove where the seal for the brake runs. Thought I might give it a try. Surely I'm not the first one to think of it.

Thanks for all the input. Think I'll look for a sleeve. If I can't find one I'll give the JB Weld a try and see how long it lasts.

I just filled a scratch about .030 deep on a fork lift hydralic cyl., final sanding with 100 grit wet.It has been in daily use with the repair and new seals over 400 hours and no leak.

I think you'd have a real tough time getting the epoxy surface slick enough to not wear the seal richt out.

Take your shafts to your seal supplier and ask for a speedy sleeve, I think you would be more satisfied in the long run. It gives a real smooth surface for the seal to run on and a tight fit on the shaft.

JBWeld is strong, but is only for parts that don't move, the groove will eventually come back. I have replaced those seals in two tractors, a C and Super H, both were grooved -- since the new seals are narrower than the old leather ones, they will probably run in a slightly difference place and won't leak. Short of having them rebuilt, you can use a Speedy or Redi-sleeve, I would guess $50-$75 for that size shaft, but with slow turning, they will last for years.

Besides roughing it up be sure its as clean as you can get it. Wipe it down with acetone or alcohol.

I have a 1954 CASE VAC and the end cap for the steering box cracked out-it is similar to the big bearing retaining nut on my Farmall C and your Super C in the same spot. I built it back up with DEVCO? 2ton 2-part clear epoxy, filed and milled it to size and shape, not a lick of trouble. I have used JB weld to plug holes and seal cracked water jackets, but not shafts yet. I DEFINALTY RECOMMEND GETTING THE SHAFT AS ROUGH AS POSSIBLE SO IT STICKS!!! If you don't, it will just peel right off. Just my 2 cents

Devcon, similar to but better than JB weld. Devcon also makes a titanium version. This titanium stuff looks odd because it will not be black. I believe it is a little stronger than the steel/iron stuff. Great stuff, darned expensive.
