Farmall M stuck in 1L

I have a Farmall M (49 or 50)wf that got stuck in 1L this weekend while pushing dirt with a loader. I was able to get the gear unstuck by rocking the tractor back a little but now it doesn’t matter what gear I shift into… the tractor is running only in 1L. The gears will shift all into all the gears but it doesn't matter where it's at R-5 or neutral.. its running in 1L. Any ideas on what this is (clutch plate, spring)? Is it something a weekend shade tree mechanic can fix or just shouldn’t mess with? I appreciate any help.

The bottom end of your shift lever has worn down, and is no longer grabbing into the notches in the shift rails. This is quite common. Your shift lever is held in place by a pin, the pin, if original, will be held in place by 2 small soft plugs, one at either side. You can pry the plugs off, or just put a punch against one of them and hit with a hammer, the pin and the plugs will come out, then remove the shift lever, it will just lift up. Now you can look down in the hole and see those shift rails, using a large screwdriver, you can line them up so the notches are all in line. The next thing is to build up the worn end of the lever by welding it, I think it needs to measure something like 1/4" by 1/2"? and should be more or less square, not rounded.

Good advice!

I might add that the shift lever is spring loaded in the upward direction. If the pin is well worn, it may have a groove in it which will require the shift lever be pushed down before it can be pushed or driven out. Just driving on it without pushing down on the lever may break something. Once you get the soft plugs out you can push down on the lever and push the pin out with your finger or a small tool.
