Just brought a new-to-me 826 home and played with it a bit more after driving it 18 miles home. In a rainstorm. Ahem! I tried the TA before purchase and tried it again today on some hard ground. I engaged it while idling forward in fourth gear, held the brakes as hard as I could and fed in a little throttle. Didn't slip. Almost stalled the engine. Is this a valid test? It was good and warmed up form the drive back. Any truth to the rumor to use it or lose it? The guy I bought it from hadn't used it in four years. Should I worry? Thanks guys!

I worked at a case IH dealer and the way we allways checked is put it in a higher gear full throttle load the brakes with the t/a in high side then pull back to low side real quick. If t/a is good it will snap right into low. If it hesitates and grabs you will soon be putting one in. If you dont want to spend the money leave it in high and take the handle off. The low side is the wet side it wont slip in high as this is the gear side. hope this helps out

Yes, that"s true. If you never use it, the sprauges will develop flat spots and won"t grab.

Well, I'll make sure I don't lose it.I'll be plowing in about two weeks! BTW, K.B. is the operational test I performed a valid one? I read your old post about how the TA works. Best explanation I've seen! Many thanks.

The best way is to do a full hydraulic test to the MCV system, but that requires guages and a flow rater. Your test is about the best you can do short of that, but make sure to try it out under full load with the plow. Make sure the transmission pressure light on the dash works, if you see it come on any time other than when the clutch pedal is depressed or while shifting the TA (such as holding the steering wheel against the stop), you've got problems. Get an I&T manual and go through the entire transmission, clutch, TA, dump valve, and transmission brake adjustment procedure. The tractor will shift easier, and the TA will last longer. Make sure you never pull back the TA to slow down a heavy load, such as coming off the road with a full chopper box, that's the best way to fry the brake pack.

Thanks K.B. I've read many of your posts and found them very helpful. I know there are a lot of grateful people out there, me included, that have benefited from your expertise. I知 fairly new to tractors and farming, but most of my experience thus far has been on blue tractors. I致e got a manual coming and I have some hydraulic test gauges for automatic transmissions that will probably work. The tractor seems to shift pretty well now (accounting for some slop in the linkage) but I値l get it dialed in soon. I値l be plowing in a couple of weeks and I値l keep you posted. Many thanks to you and all the other guys that chimed in to help get me up to speed on red tractors

I don't think it will be a problem. As long as you remember it's there, you will use it.
