Let me start out saying that I know nothing about the IH 504 utility diesel (with backhoe/loader) I bought. Price was $700. Engine runs great, hydraulics need some help (bad hoses, a couple of leaks, etc). The major problem is no reverse. The only docs I have is a IH parts manual. So, for some questions: There is a lever to left of the gear shift, pushing this lever forward and in gears 1-5 (see what I think the shift pattern is) the tractor moves forward. It will not move when I place it in what I think it Reverse Z(R? below) If I move this lever backward, the tractor will not move in any gear. Looking in the parts manual, it labels the lever, the forward reverse... (diagram of what I think the shift pattern is - R?=reverse?) R?  2    4 |      |      | |      |      | |      |      | |----|----| |      |      | |      |      | |      |      | 1    3     5 I really am hoping that my reverse problem is in the main transmission and has nothing to do with that lever. I say this because it doesn't look fun to split the tractor. If the problem is in the reverse idler in the "main transmission" then by the diagram in the parts manual, the tractor may not need to be split.
Am I wrong? Is this the correct shift pattern? What is the "R?" gear in the diagram above? What does the lever I am hoping is not the forward/reverse do? Am I screwed? (I do own a IH payloader front-end loader and a Ford 1720 so I'm not too scared to get my hands dirty. All I use them for is moving dirt and cutting grass my small (5 acres) property. Was wanting the backhoe for cleaning out the ditches etc... Thanks for any help from this newbie... Dan
