I'm going to change the hydraulic oil and filter on my 826 for the first time (for me), and wonder where y'all find the best price for Hy-Tran. So far, the lowest I've seen for oil rated as meeting the B-6 IH spec is $24.00 for 5-gallons at Wal-Mart (Super Tech-, Made by the Specialty OIl Company in Texas). Amsoil is probably the highest and I' m not sure I can stay conscious quoting the price. I passed out when I saw it. My Case/IH dealer wants $42. I have yeat to check at my local ag lubricant dealer. TSC is pretty low too but a few bucks higher. Hints anyone?

Jim, look into the quality brand-name hydraulic/transmission oils, such as Hy-Tran, John Deere Hy-Gard, or whatever New Holland or Agco call there"s. Pick the cheapest out of that bunch. The name brands trap more condensation and are made for use in the most heavy-duty and high-tech modern powershifts. The most important thing, no matter what brand you choose, is to never mix different brands together. The additives can react, turn to varnish, and stick every valve in the hydraulic system. You hear so many guys claim that they wrecked their Deere by topping it off with Hy-Tran or wrecked their IH by using Hy-Gard, but the real problem was that the Hy-Tran had a bad reaction with the Hy-Gard or whatever else they had in there.

One more thing, if your're going to flush it out with diesel fuel, don't start it or drive it around. That might work fine in a 400, but those don't have hydraulic clutch packs to lock up. If there's obvious contamination, I just pour in a few gallons of diesel fuel and drain it back out.

Will not argue that Hy Tran is or is not better than name brand fluids that meets IH specs but will bet the farm that Hy Tran is not made by Case New Holland but is outsourced to other companys. Was at Toyota dealer recently and local Shell distribitor was unloading pick up load of Genuine Toyota oil and transmission fluid.

Do this: Put some of the "cheap oil" on your hands, now go wash them with hand cleaner, see how easy it is to wash off your hands. Now do the same with hy-tran. See how hard it is to wash off. This means u r getting better protection with Hy-Tran!

My dad bought the cheap stuff at Wally World and the farm and home type stores now he has two tractors with hydraulics that don't work. They aren't Internationals or Farmall tractors but you should try and use what is made for them and not mixing various brands. I like the suggestions of several who recommended buying Hy-Tran in bulk at the CaseIH dealer in clean 5 gal. containers or a small barrel. Good luck.

I just bought genuine Hy-Tran bulk from my local dealer. Took in two 5-gallon pails and got them filled for $60.84 including taxes. Cheep stuff at the farm store is almost $25.00 plus tax so I figured the Hy-Tran was worth the extra chips for my IH tractor.

Jim, Unless the oil is running out as fast as you put it in, don"t you think that old 826 has earned the luxury of having $42.00 per 5 gal. IH Hy-Tran installed. I know that there may be some cheap stuff out there, but you"re only saving $18.00 by passing up Wally-World. Will that really alter your lifestyle that much? Go ahead and treat the "Ole Girl" to the best.

gotta go with the majority here, don't worry bout price, get the hy-tran from case. ask about bulk. i take a 55 gallon drum in myself to get filled and it's considerably cheaper. i never fill the drum, just get 10-30 gallons at a time.

I might feel guilty abouty paying the $42 at Case-IH but I would feel even worse when problems arise from using the stuff from Wal-Mart. I am not saying the discount store stuff isn't good, but considering what a rebuild would cost is it worth taking the chance?

Y"all are"nt listening to him. He said it was an 826.(26) that"s a hydrostat. Don"t dick around with it flushing it out like a gear grinder with diesel. Use hy-tran oil. Hydro"s are touchy because they are essentially a big @ss hydraulic pump and hyd motor.I would never put diesel in one.Hydro"s are the greatest thing to ever happen to tractors until they go bad then they are one of the worst things .

Not all 826s are hydros. Most were gear drive.

Ask your IH dealer if he has bulk oil. You can save quite a bit by taking in your own cans.

Hy-tran is designed(?) to absorb moisture and keep it from settling and rusting critical parts. For that reason and the fact that it was developed for the IH systems I would use it. Cheaper than repairs on the tractor.

I don't think a 856 requires a hytran grade of oil, it doesn't have a power shift transmission
so I would think a top grade of hyd oil would be good enough. I could be wrong but you might ask around. good luck.

We had a local petroleum dealer that sold 5 gal. tractor fluid for years for $19.95 and raised it to 21.95 just before he sold to a national chain.
I would check with a local dealer and see if he runs a good deal on it. One thought on Amsoil, they advertise in aviation mags for dealers. Kind of like avon or amway was. To me it"s just a high priced gimmick.

TSC has a special, 6 gals, 29.00. Don't think these old Farmalls knew what "hy-Tran" was when they were born. Good tip on the diesel to clean it out but my Grandad was a farm mechanic from 28-78 and he liked 1/2 kerosene, 1/2 old oil. Now that the kerosene is gone he would probably use diesel/oil. Just change the oil on two of your vehicles, and use that 11 qts with some diesel for a flush.

826 is not an "old" Farmall. It was designed for Hytran.

I H will be the better for the money. It will seperate the water better for winter operation and lubrication..

Make sure when you drain it you put 8 gallons of diesel in it first and drive it down the road and then drain again. Lots of crap in there. I did it twice when I got my 400 9 years ago. Nobody took care it...
