300 gas vs 504 diesel

I am in the process of looking at used tractors. What do I need to be aware of regarding each of these models. Neither has a front end loader and eventually I would like to add one to whatever I buy. Do each of them have adequate hydraulics for a front end loader?

My 350 runs just a little short on the hydraulic reservoir to operate the one-way cylinders on my loader. I believe the 504 has a 12 gpm pump and the 300 has a 9 gpm pump. The 504 is lighter and has 40hp to the 300's 34hp. The 504 will also be 5 to 14 years newer then the 300. Does the 504 have a fast hitch or a three point?

Thanks for the replies. What is a fast hitch? How is it different from a 3 point hitch. How can I send a picture of the tractor?

A three point has two arms that come out from the lower rear of the tractor and have "balls with holes" through them for mounting impliments. A "third arm" has an attachment below the seat. This system is what was first used on the 9N fords and are used on almost every tractor today.

The Ebay tractor listed below as the three point setup, you can see the mounting bracket for the third arm behinds and below the seat - but the actual arm is not attached.

A fast hitch has a somewhat similar setup, but lack the third arm, hard to describe, the Ebay listing below shows a picture of one.

It will fire up a few people, but the three point is generally seen as more desirable as it is the current "standard". The "fasthitch" or "two point" was propritiary to International and died out in the early 70s, when IH switched to three point hitches also.

You need to check if the 300 has power steering or not, it was an option on them and if you ever plan on using the tractor with a loader you will need power steering.

Nathan: There has been a lot of hours put in by a lot of folks on old Farmalls with no power steering and doing loader work. My dad's H and later 300 never had power steering and they loaded all the manure from 85 holsteins, 7 months housed feeding. Just makes for good arm and shoulder muscles. Remember it was 40 holsteins and the fork, just a few years previous.

Mick: Both will have adequate hydraulics for a loader. 300 may need an added resovoir for a loader with hydraulic bucket. 504 if both are in good working order should have a bit more lifting power.

You may wish to check also, optional pumps, some have more volume in gpm than others. I've forgotten about these two specific models, but something rings a bell about 9 and 12 gpm pumps for 300 and 12 and 17 gpm for 504. I may be confusing these specs with other IH models.
