1950 Cub, leaking oil, left rear..help.

Earlier this week, I found out my 1950 Cub was low on gear oil...I "thought" I solved the problem by filling it up, but, today, there was about 3qrts of gear oil on my barn floor (yuck)...it is leaking, steadily from left rear & I noticed it dribbling from PTO seal...I've never had this apart (even though I bought new wheels & tires for it years ago, I have never had the rear tires off, they still have some tread & they're 55 yrs old!)...anyway, I am going to start taking it apart tomorrow, how big a job am I getting into? Anything I "need" to know before I attempt to take apart a tractor that has been bolted together for 55 yrs? I soaked all my bolts/nuts in penatrating oil tonight. Where can I order the seals I will need? Thanks, Josh in Maine

If you haven't previously completely drained and refilled the gear oil, you may want to instead of just topping off. Mine was half full of water mixed with the oil when I bought it. The seals were leaking just like yours. When I drained the oil (and water), then refilled to the proper level, the seals quit leaking. But I'm still looking at fixing the oil soaked brake bands as previous posts have mentioned....

Josh,

Your Cub may not need as much work as you think. It, no doubt still has the original seals which were marginal at best... they were designed to contain splashing lube. Your problem is that your trasnmission is grossly overfilled. Its' total capacity is less than you think it leaked... 3 1/2 PTS!! There is a plug to check the level low on the left side about even with the shifter. Remove the plug and allow the extra to drain out.

Your problem now may be an oil saturated brake band. To fix the brake problem it will be necessary to remove the final drive... and you might as well replace the seal (PN 385872R91,or CR 10681, or Nat 480049SSR)while you have access.

Can I still use my tractor if I just put the required amount of lube in it w/ut taking it all apart??? If it's just the brakes that have gear oil on them, I'm not too worried, or could I have caused other damage? I'm in midst of building new barn & I really don't have time to take the Cub apart if I can aviod it...thanks, Josh

George is right on. Just remove that small plug on the left side and let it drain out until it stops. You will then be filled to the proper level. You can use the tractor but watch the brakes since they may be oil soaked.
