I just got home from the summer trip to the mountains. We stay at my aunt's house, that used to be my grandfather's, and his father's before. In the kitchen there's a thermometer from his tractor dealerships, one of the few we have left. This one is only about ten inches high. Somewhere there's one that looks like it, but 30 inches and rounded edges. I think it's mine, but I haven't seen it in a long time.
Notice the four digit phone numbers. Walterboro and St. George had only one exchange apiece - I barely remember when we started having to dial a "9" before the number.

That makes me feel old, when I was growing up we still had party lines. then for the longest time we just dialed 4 numbers also. Now you have to dial what seems like a hundred numbers to call across the street. They call this progress????? ?

You feel old we had an operator if you wanted to call some one that was not on your line you had to go though. To call some one on the line each ph had a certain ring ours was 2 longs and a short, Granddads was 2 longs my Uncle was a long and a short. if you were lucky you could hear whoever you were talking to. When you wanted to talk to some one on another line 1 long ring got the operator you told her the number and she would plug in that line and ring their ring. The same for long distence. A lot of the time if it was long distence it was better to go to the telephone exchange and use one of their phones.
