If the engine has good compression, and is mechanically good, then timing/wiring/firing order as described below, is the problem. If there is an issue with a stuck valve, or a big chip of deposit under a valve, wiring incorrectly might allow the engine to run on 4 and 2 (they were still in the correct sequence. Thus allowing 1 and 3 to not fire at all. Though rough, it will run on two cyls. Id use a plug wire pliers (good insulation) to pull off #1 and # 3, at the plug, while running to see if they are dead. If pulling them makes no difference, put the #3 wire on the #1 plug (where it belongs in the correct firing order) and see if things get worse. If so pull that wire and put the wire from pulled from #1 on three where it belongs from the factory. If it now runs on three, #1 cyl needs a compression check/service.
