Farmall Cub - carb fix?

The threads for one of the mounting studs on the mounting flange (nearest the inlet) have stripped out and I need a way to secure the stud. Thought about getting a longer stud and putting a nut on the end (under the flange), but there is not enough clearance there to allow installing a nut. I tried JB Weld, but it is not strong enough. I'd really rather not drill and tap up to next size if it can be avoided. I'm hoping someone here can offer some good ideas on how to fix it..... ..... ...James

After thinking it over, I'm going to go with the helicoil fix.

A BIG THANKS TO ALL WHO REPLIED!

James:

My 48 Cub Ellie-Mae has that kind of nut - kind of thin on one side. It is an okay fix for the time being, but it is NOT a permanent fix. If you really want to do it right - use the helicoil option. I know that is what I intend to do to all 3 of my Cub carbs...

Check out the Maintenance Tips and Techniques section of the Cub Manual Server at www.cleancomputes.com/Cub/index.html. There are some good articles by "Lurker" Carl Kurnas on Carbs.. plus tons of other stuff..

Just one other opinion...I did what you don't want to do. I tapped it to the next size and it works great. The manifold flange holes were already large enough to accept the bolts(5/16 if I remember correctly). I chose this over helicoil and I THINK I made the right decision for MY cub. BUT, what's right for me may not be right for you. Kevin

I would go with the helicoil as Jim has suggested.
It will be good as new then. Hal

I have fixed 2 of my Cub carbs by doing what you first thought of. Take the nut you wanted to put under the flange and grind one side of it down for just enough clearance that the nut hole threads will accept the stud or bolt going through the 2 mating pieces. You can still use a wrench on the bottom to hold the nut.

There are helicoil repair kits for every U.S. and metric size. A good autoparts store, or tool store will have them. The hole is drilled out to a slightly larger size, then a tap is run through the hole for the helicoil thread insert. It looks like a spring and winds into the new hole replacing the original threads with steel. It is in most cases stronger than original, and uses the original bolt (new if the old one was dammaged.
Works every time,
Jim Nicholson
