Seen in post below that Hobo has a kit available for Super A. Does anyone know if the Super A kit would fit a regular A? Mine is a 1946 A, NOT Super, and the steering is really sloppy....Stan

Worked on a 46A last winter that had the tapered shaft and nut. No reason to get a kit as you dont know what is wrong with yours yet. Seals bearings and bushings are the parts you mite need and they can be bought easy. Get some gasket matl and make your own. You will want the axle off so you can split the sector. Fill with 90wt when done and will steer like new.

Stan: There is a difference, but it's not at time of model change, but rather somewhere between serial numbers 300,000 and 325,000 of Super A. If you notice all A's and early Supers hads steering control arms at each spindle S shaped with a ball on the end. Tyrods had a socket to fit over ball. Later Super A's had automotive type tyrods.

About the same time the vertical shaft in gear box changed from a square taper where steering control arm goes on, to a tapered round shaft with a woodruff key. All this change took place about mid 1951.

Stan, That is the first that I have ever heard about a kit, but in answer to your question, I dont believe there is any difference, I have both an A and Super A, and did not spot any differences.

Hi Steve, I would send an email to Hobo and see whether if he would know if that kit would fit your A. Hobo's email: hobo1301@alltel.net
Hal
PS: My manual doesn't show any difference between the A or SuperA, but that doesn't mean there isn't.

My manual has the A, AV, Super A and Super AV with the same steering gear unit pictured. It has a bearing on the worm and one on the sector.
They probably can be cross-referenced at most auto
parts store if Case/IH doesn't have them. I restored an A, the steering was the only thing not worn out. Hal
