dumb question on axle oil in 100

This question comes from my ignorance of this part of the machine, I've never messed with it before, am really new to this tractor altogether. When I took out the left axle on the 100, it was dry. Took it out to change the bearings because it was howling and I could rock the wheel. Don't see anywhere to put oil in it, and the gearbox was full. Do you just fill the little pan before it goes back on or is something stopped up, or am I missing it? Matt.

Jims right. The bull gear carries oil up to the top gear and thus the bearings. There are oil holes for oil to drain back down and to the bearings I think. I run a wire thru these holes to make sure they are open. You should use a new gasket when you put that lower pan back on and don't over tighten those bolts as this is like an oil pan on an engine. I use 90W gear lube. Holds 1 1/2 quarts if I remember right. There should be gaskets for the bearing caps also if I remember right. Your dealer should have an exploded view of this. Dave.

You're missing it. There is a fill/level plug located between the 2 front implement mounting holes/studs at the lower, inner edge of the final drive housing.

Although the book indicates this opening as the fill level, it really doesn't need to be that high. Keeping it just below the pan gasket level will keep oil from weeping past the gaskets. As long as the bull gear is running in oil, everything will get enough lubrication.
