Had the genrator rebuilt on my Cub. Starts up gauge goes up to 10 or so,then drops back down after running about a minute or so and will read about -2 or so when running, has always done this and never had any problem. My question is , shouldnt the gauge stay up until the battery is charged up, say if I accidentally left the switch on, which I did last night. I jumped it off, started up,gauge goes up to 20,stays there for a minute or so and goes back down to around -2,just like if the battery was fully charged. Sound normal?

John M, if the Generator and Voltage Regulator are working properly,,,,, ,,and if the Battery is good even though it may be ran down some,,,,, ,,,and if the belts good n tight and shes wired correct,,,,,I would expect it to charge maybe 20 amps or so after start up but then if no lights are on to hover slightly in the + charge (maybe a couple amps) as long as your at least a fast idle BUT I WOULDNT EXPECT IT TO SHOW MINUS 2 AMPS DISCHARGING UNLESS SHE WAS IDLING REALLLLL LLLLL SLOWWWWW WWWWW WW OR THE BELT WAS LOOSE !!!!! !!!!! !!!!!

When shes at that minus 2 amps you speak of, is that at slow or fast idle?? and does she go up in the slight + charge as RPM increases????? If faster RPM brings her up, I dont think I would worry to much yet provided the battery never needs charging.

I wonder how accurate your ammeter is??? The battery should read 12.6 volts setting but then increase up to the 13 to 13.5 or slightly more at full RPM if the batterys okay and the charging circuit is okay.

Is this a 2 wire cutout relay and light switch generator field current type control or a full fledged 3 or 4 wire Voltage Regulator system after you upgraded to 12 volts as you mentioned ????? ?

The -2 amps reads at all speeds. If I idle it down it will drop lower but will jump back up to the -2.If I idle it up higher, it will go on the positive side, how much depends on how long I let it idle.Longer time idling, higher and mor etime the gauge goes. When I changed it,it had a cutout, but went with a regulator as noone local has cutouts.the lightswitch is now just a light switch.

Re: Cub not Charging right? (a little more) in reply to John M, 08-28-2005 06:51:26
Let me start at the beginning. When I got this Cub it was doing this: Engine started and ran fine, gauge showed NO charge but battery never went dead.took gauge off and tested it on my M and it indeed was not working. Had a spare gauge in the shop so I put it on and it has been doing fine since, like I descibed in my previous post. Last weekend I pulled it out of the barn and immediately noticed the gauge wasnt moving. Pulled the generator off and took it to my local guy for testing, not putting out anything. He found the windings shorted out.had it rewound for 12 volt, new regualtor put on and at his shop,it was charging like 38 amps at 2000 rpms and I was pleased so I put it back on, wired correctly and polarized correctly, new 12 volt battery.Starts up,gauge jumps to `10-12 or so then slowly comes back down, so I am thinking everything is fine.Well,I usually turn off the gas when I shut it down and let it run out then push in the kill switch, but this time I forgot. Went out yesterday and found a completely dead battery.used my little battery pack thing to jump it off and looked at the gauge,up to 20 and a little past and then slowly came back down to where it is usually at when its running,-2 maybe a liittle closer to -1. But why wouldnt the generator keep charging? I can see when the battery is fully charged, but when its dead?

Do you have a VOM (volt, ohm meter)? Check the voltage at the battery when the engine is running. It should be above 6.5 volts. If it"s only 6.5 or so on initial start up, and then drops down to 6 or less volts, then you have a problem. Otherwise the ammeter may just read "funny". All of my ammeters read differently from each other.

Hmm. in reply to John M, 08-28-2005 06:51:26
It doesn't sound right to me. But, I'm no charging expert. If you charged it to almost full this morning before starting it then maybe it's good. If it reads minus two with the engine running a good amount above idle I'd say somethings amiss.
