Is Turbo a standard feature on International 1206 Tractors or was it an option?

Thanks

Nat I don't know where people get the idea a 656 has a M rear end. They might look like it from the out side but nothing like it on the inside. Timken bearings heaver rear end housing bigger bull gears better oiling, better brakes just because shims can be taken out to keep the accuator where it should be a pin so it can't move around. If IH had did all this for the 460 560 they would not had the recall for the 460 560. Take a 656 any day over a 560. We had 656's where I come from with 234 picker's on them no problems.

Turbo was never an "option" on any IH tractor. They either had turbos or didn't. Some farmers, in misguided attempts to make more power, would either retrofit from stock parts, or add an aftermarket kit.

That said, all 1206 tractors had turbochargers.

Careful now Nat, I don't believe it is a "misguided" attempt. I have a 656 that has 8500 hours and has been turboed all it's life. It is one way slick tractor.

Okay, maybe misguided was a bad choice of words...

Penny wise, pound foolish might be a more appropriate phrase. Sure, you get more horsepower, but you completely ignore the drivetrain in the process. It's fine if you don't use the horsepower, but people turning 656s into 90HP tractors, then USING them like 90HP tractors... The tractor abuse is just so horrible I can't even stomach thinking about it!

A 656 is built around what is basically an M rear end. An M had 33HP. You do the math...

My father bought a 4020 with a turbo in 1979. It was a 1968 model with about 5000 hours on it. I assume the engine had not been overhauled. We did not abuse or overwork the tractor just because it had a turbo and could do more work. My uncle also had a 4020 (no turbo). Our 4020 used quite a bit less fuel. My father's 4020 was bought by a family friend that still owns it. It now has over 10,000 hours and is still on the original engine and has never had the rear end or transmission worked on. This turbo after market add-on saved fuel and did not negatively affect the longevity of the tractor. Pound foolish? Not in this case.

Well for a tractor built 40 years ago I guess it ain't doin' too bad. I think mine is putting out about 75 horse and your "M" rearend seems to be taking it fine. But I ain't gonna fight with you Nat, I gotta go to the hayfield and drag the 14 foot swather through some heavy cane.

Nat, would a turbo help fuel economy? Maybe that would be a good reason to put one on a smaller tractor. I'd love to have a turbo on my M, I think the drive train could handle the power. The block, now that's another question.
