Hi Guys I was wondering if any of you had heard of or were going to do the not buy any Fuel on Sep 1st deal. I had heard that people were trying to get everyone not to buy on Sep 1st to creat a stock pile of unused Gas here. They say it will only take one day of no sales to get an oil stock that would greatly reduce prices . I dont know if this is true or not but High test hit $3.00 a gal here in central NY today. JON

Those that don't buy on Septrmber 1 for $3.00 can buy on September 2 for $3.50.

It'll have about as much effect on gas prices as refusing to sell corn or soybeans for a day will have on the overall price of grain.
Hugh has it pretty well nailed in his post. It won't be refusing to BUY gas that will help, it'll be refusing to USE fuel that will make a difference.
The other part of the problem is that some folks seem to think that somehow there should be a way to MAKE fuel prices come down, or as I've heard some say "Get back to where they belong." We've ended the days of cheap fuel. Even if we use less, it won't become cheaper. Unfortunately, we're about to discover that it hasn't become expensive....yet!

John: I read your post last evening, was quite tired so turned in early. Thought we may have started some discussion on the real problem at hand, that being use of fuel. Got up here about 1/2 hour ago, and nothing. I guess folks just want to bury their heads in the sand when it comes to the subject of excessive fuel use. Folks tend to think the auto industry has cured everything with emission controls, however it still takes the same amount of oxygen to burn a gallon of gasoline.

I remember once, a construction crew pumping out a storm sewer, pump wasn't working well, so a guy went down in man hole, he died, as did a second guy who went to his rescue. These guys did not die from carbon monoxide but rather lack of oxygen. Precisely why the pump wasn't working well either, lack of oxygen. Man and other species have adapted well to harmful chemicals. He will not fare so well without oxygen. We would now have colonies on other planets if we just knew how to lick that oxygen problem.

As a society I see three areas we could substancially reduce our use of fuel (1) reduce air travel by 60% or more (2) get long haul trucks off the highway (3) reduce our personal use of fuel. Most of those folks flighting around the world by air are not getting anything out of the trip anyhow. I know a couple, they have been to every corner of the world, didn't learn a thing, went right over their heads. I met up with a trucker last week, he hauls Ontario hot house tomatoes to British Columbia, his back haul, British Columbia hot house tomatoes to Ontario. Really, how different can those tomatoes be? I've been told if you conduct a roadside survey most weekends, ask folks where they are headed when they left home, about 30% have no idea, just driving.

The rich investers of the world love habits like these. These are just a few minor examples. It's business, and it's called, "relieving over paid folks of their money". We had a gas station operator in my home town, kind of a Boss Hogg type of guy. That was his business philosophy, "relieving overpaid folks of their money".

Hugh:

Well said. Someday when I get a little older, I am only 51, so still a little wet behind the ears :-)), I will be glad to have a little of the wisdom you show in a lot of your posts.

Now for a comment -- yup, get the tractor trailers off the highways. That will save fuel, lower emmissions by orders of magnitude and save lives, never mind wear and tear on our nations highways. We need to use rail again -- unfortunately the railroads overpriced themselves out of the market and had to start shutting down lines -- CN and CP are prime examples... also, keep the government's fingers out of it.

Rail really is the best way to ship large amounts of materiel economically. The only other avenue - where practical is ship -- Great Lakes, East and West coast need to take more advantage of these modes.

Also, revitalizing our railroads and our ships will provide many more jobs in building/maintaining railroad infrastructure, equipment and of course ship building, which would be a boone for both of our countries. Course the US will have to modify the Jones Act to conform with NAFTA - that way best bidder wins for both sides.. also, both of our countries would have to modify how we flag our vessels -- instead of flags of convienence we need to make sure US ships are flagged in the US and Canadian ships are flagged in Canada - instead of Liberia or Panama as the case may be. We also need to make sure we use national crews - and not allow companies to use crews from Asia and other nations who will work for a pittance...

Ok, off of me soapbox now... :-))))

This was not in any way my idea I read that this was a hope from bunch of people and there stradigy did not sound bad by the #s they were giving. I know that every one filling there tank the day before and after would have no efect on not buying inbetween on the first. And no I dont need to go back to school . I know whats causing this spike and what alot of people are doing to make it worse. I was just trying to see if any of you had heard about this. To actualy see if it was as big as the papers were saying it was going to be.Of if it was just some people that did not know what they were talking abouts pipe dreams.Or if people were really trying to get the people that can do something about this to start really thinking about it. They had to do something in the 70s why not now.It just seems now that if I go on national TV tonight and say you will see gas prices at $5.00 a gallon by the first of next year. People start raising it and it would hit that amount .I wonder if NOT talking about it for a month would slow everything down. Make it VODO to talk about oil and Gas.And I bet it would eventually go down. My real question is did any of the refinerys get Damaged in the Huricane.? JON

JON: Well those folks saying don't buy gas Sept.01, 05 got the right idea. Problem is Sept. 01 only, wont have any effect, nor will the whole month of Sept. We've got to look at the next two decades. Having said that, we all know water and rail are our most cost effective means of transportation. We cant just look at what it costs to fuel up our own personal vehicle. Lets look at our share of the fuel costs of moving goods.

As a society we must learn to burn less fuel, and maybe we should concern ourselves about using less of the oxygen it takes to burn the fuel. Let me run this one by you, see how everyone feels about it. How would you like it if we banned all motor sports, not allow trucks to cross more than one state or provincial boundry, banned all but emergency air travel and last but not least ration personal use of fuel. It doesn't matter how you approach this matter, by this time next year your cost of living will be up 25%. Your added cost of personal fuel is quite minor. Wait until you get the bill for the added fuel cost of producing and moving goods we consume.

Then there is another approach, put controls on the price of fuel. Add air meters to all internal combustion engines and industrial plants, then charge them a tax based on consumption of oxygen. Earth's atmosphere contained 40% oxygen at the beginning of the industrial revolution. In 2005 that is now below 20%. It wasn't the smokers of the world that caused that one. However 30 years ago they were the ones using inhalers, today half the kids in elementry schools have them. Given the choise folks, I'll take the oxygen over gasoline and diesel anyday.

We have yet to scratch the tip of the ice berg. Our economy is going to change drastically. Are you ready? Maybe rather than buying those parts from Asia, you'll have to buy parts made by your neighbor who gets a comparable wage to you.

Gas was 2.62 here in west Texas yesterday at the coop. Today it is 2.94 outta the same pump. I sold my F350 diesel last week, and I'm lookin for an engine for my Cushman, 22 HP OMC.

We all have to make an effort, to have any effect at all. I have to travel about 1/2 mile to do evening chores. I have parked my F250, except when I have to haul something. I now ride my wifes bicycle 1/2 mile to the barn (unless its raining). It isn"t much, but every time I do it, thats fuel that didn"t get burned. Gene

I'm burning the $2.23 gas i bought this summer and waiting for things to leval out. But yeah, like the others said, where did you go to school? Unless you stop driving, not buying gas on a certain day ain't gonna make no difference. I fact it would be a good thing as stations could reduce their overhead if they only had to be open 6 days a week.

I don't see how this will do anything. For it to work one would have to not buy AND not use gas/fuel for a day.

Well I will tell you this I decided to fill up this morning due to the increases. And by chance I saw the owner of the Gas station I was going to elswhere this AM and I asked him if he jumped the dime over night like some of the others. And he said No we topped off yesterday all our tanks and wont be getting more untill Thursday then his price will be higher and he will have to increase the pump prices. So I follow him to his station and low and behold his prices were raised .11 cents overnight or this AM and he came over and apoligised to me for not knowing this. So If he bought gas yesterday at the lower price and does not get an increase in his price untill he gets more Gas thursday isnt that gouging or Fraud? JON

The tanker might not have been loaded as soon as he was expecting. Most companies have a 6pm rack price.

The local station here has been known to raise their prices up to 3 different times on the same tanker load. I guess it's possible that the station doesn't pay for that load when they get it and when the supplier sends the bill the price reflects the going price for that day? Don't know, but it doesn't seem fair to me.

I guess you guys know how much TAX is involved in fuel price dilemma - in fact most of the money per gallon goes into local, state and federal tax system. That"s why no politician will even say anything about the price of fuel.
Get ready - propane is next!

Re: Fuel Taxes in reply to Illinois Boy, 08-30-2005 08:13:27
Actually at the current prices, taxes are no longer a major component of our gasoline price. I posted a link below for the 2002 taxes by state, the last one I could find was a November 2004 list that had the average taxes on gas at 44 cents per gallon.

One of the major plays in the price of fuel right now is speculation. Gasoline futures are being bought and sold at unheard of levels by traders trying to play the market.

Of course the only way to control costs is by curbing the demand. Fuel efficent vehicles, shared commutes, public transportation, etc. are not going to happen unless gas prices stay where they are or increase. Of course most of us on this forum are rural people and high costs are going to affect us more than urban people who can use public transportation, etc.

I personally feel that we would be better of brainstorming on ways to save fuel than we would be by complaining about it.

My 2 cents. Nathan

We all complain about the high cost of fuel but we still load our tractors on the trailer and travel who knows how many miles just to let other people who have done the same thing a chance to look at them. We complain about the cost but we still take our tractors on tractor drives. We complain but we still get in the car and drive to a restaurant when we could have just as easily prepared a meal at home. The cost of fuel is too high but some of you still drive out to the golf course. Get the point? I think fuel is way too high, but until we all eliminate those unnecessary trips no one will listen.

It sounds good in theory but if everybody fills up on August 31 or September 2 then what have you gained. About all that it does is make a statement to the station owners who can't do anything but pass along the price increases. Unfortunately it hurts your local gas station more than it ever will the big oil companies. Just my $0.02 worth on this.

Waste of time! Not buying gas for one day will accomplish nothing – other than perhaps giving station operators a day off.

In the current economic climate the only way gas prices can drop is if people stop buying the stuff for MONTHS – i.e stop driving entirely. And that’s not likely to happen…

Basically, it doesn't matter if we buy gas sept. 1 or not. If we do not buy it on that day, we will buy it the day before or the day after, and extra sales on the other days will make up for no sales on that day. I wish it would work though.
