does anyone know if an engine from some other F series tractor or other will fit a 10-20 or is the same as a 10-20 engine? I'm giving up on trying to get a 10-20 engine rebuilt. Been waiting years now for various mechanics that promised to rebuild it and haven't. Now they tell me it will cost $1000's to do it? Have a Chrysler 440 and a broken off Super C engine that I may try to use otherwise. Trying to complete a roller, based on a 10-20, to use on a farm runway.

If it was my engine I would gather it up and bring it home. If there's tech school in your area, you may be able to get that engine rebuilt there. Sleeves and pistons are available and a gasket set is available too. They may be able to do this as a project, you would furnish the parts. Hal

I was just about to post same. Gather up your engine and all the parts. You can at least get something for some of the parts if you can't get it built. That's dad blasted criminal what that mech did.

You can check with the 4H Club in your area too.
There was someone that posted on here had a group restoring a tractor and he was in charge. Should've kept his posting handle. He may still post on here. You know the head is good to go since they magn-fluxed it. Hal
PS: I see a sleeve kit for a 15-30, not sure if that 10-20 block will accept that kit. It would increase the bore from 4.25" to 4.5". That kit is $900.00.

el toro, he says he magnafluxed not only the head but the whole block also, at least that is what he charged me for. so I guess it is a good one to start with.

That head and block are worth a lot since they're
free of any cracks. I would go over where that engine is located and haul it home. I hope he hasn't misplaced a lot of the parts. Did you strip the engine by removing the manifolds, mag
or clutch & flywheel before delivering the engine to the shop?

There are several auto machine shops around here
that would've rebuilt that engine like new. Hal from MD

I called Kunkle Service and they could do your engine. They would have the rods machined to accept the shell type bearings. I didn't go into cost. Hal

el toro, sorry, guess I misunderstood in my first reading. I guess what they are talking about is typical insert bearings. That would be interesting.

This is the first time that I had ever heard of doing this to babbitted connecting rods. I had Federal Mogul to rebabbiitt some connecting rods years ago. I don't think they do it anymore.
Kunkle's shop machinists are all ASE certified, some are master machinist certified. You could
call Kunkle and talk to Gary in the shop. He has been there over 40 years and he's in charge.
They're closed until Tuesday.

Have you been able to find a sleeve & piston kit? Thefordsonhouse has a gasket set for $135.00. The F-30 engine uses rod inserts along with shims to get enough clearance. These are scarce too and I'm not sure if the mains are inserts on the F-30. Hal

Can anyone tell me the piston specs on the F-30 engine?I need the pin diameter and compression height. Or where to find them? I want to install alluminum pistons, maybe overbore to 4.50" in my dad's 1936 F-30.Thanks.

I'm in Bel Air, MD. I'm about 35 miles NE of Baltimore. There's a shop here in town that may rebuild your engine. The company is Kunkle Service Co. They're open until noon today, I'll call them and ask them if they would do your engine. Their phone number is 410-838-3344 and you would need to ask for the shop. There's another shop about 15 miles from me too, I'll give another posting latr this morning. Hal

el toro, thanks for the word on kunkle and the phone number and town. I think it has babbit bearings now so guess that would be a big job putting in ball bearings, huh? Will first see what the tech school will do. thanks again.

Did the 10-20 have roller bearings for the mains? I think the F-30 may have used roller bearings for the mains. Hal

If I remember right, they have had my engine so long I'm forgetting, I think the front and rear were ball bearings.

They should be available, I wonder what the bearing number is? The 10-20 block is 284cid and I wonder what the F-30 is? The machine shop that's about 15 miles from me told me the F series used ball or roller. He may have said ball. Hal

el toro, yes the block was stripped down to the basic. Even the tubes for the push rods were removed if I'm remembering that right. I'm going and pick it up. Just have to get some time since it is 200+ miles away. The guy now rebuilds/restores hiclearance tractors. Some customer takes all he can make and I think he gets around $40,000 to $50,000 ea plus for them. He even put in a high priced paint shop just to refinish them. No wonder he doesn't have time for my poor one.

I wouldn't wait too long before its picked up.
Did you strip the engine before delivering it to the machine shop? You could've driven about 300
more miles and had that engine done here. All interstate highway except the last 12 miles. Hal

It costs some money to rebuild any engine.
What is wrong with the one you have?

lee, don't know that anything was wrong with the engine, never ran it. Probably shouldn't have given the engine to a mechanic. He stripped it all out to start from scratch (even magnafluxed it) to rebuild it and then said (after two years of holding it) it would run maybe $5000 or more. Probably could have used it like it was but thought I'd do it right for a change. A mistake.

The 10-20 & F/W-30 series engines are different. They do use the same crank & rods. Don't know about it bolting in though, I have never tried to do that.
