Dad parked H about a year before he passed 3 years ago. Brother and decided to get old girl running. Tank clean as a whistle (in the catagory of the Lord looking after fools). Took carb off and soaked in Gunk bucket for 48 hours. Blew out all passages, and I thought very carefully assembled. Put carb back on and started instantly, then just as instantly quit. It will start and run with the choke all the way on, so I took carb back off and re-cleaned with spray bomb. Checked all settings and passages and VERY carefully re-assembled. Still does the same thing. Gas carb and engine (X1 suffix). Sprayed ether around intake gasket with it running to check for leaks, none found. Checked magneto points, and timing just in case something there. HELP! This is the only IH we own, (we farm with Oliver/White as dealer was only 2 miles away till he closed) but it was Dads "pet" and we HAVE to fix it.

Thanks for all the replys. To cover some of the replys fuel flows freely from line when detached from carb, and from bowl drain. Float height and drop set to reproduction owners manual &/or servicemans guide from IH dealer. The Gunk I was refering to is the stuff in the what looks like a gallon paint can with the little basket for small parts in it made for de-gunking carbs. I'll take it apart again and check that little slot by the butterfly. Also tried richening mixture both with idle mixture screw and main jet screw. I'm very familiar with Marvel/Schebler carbs, just never had to touch the H before. I'll let you know what I find.

OPPS missed a couple. It has only set for 4 years. Already tried with intake off. The venturi in mine appears to be a cast zinc by texture and density, and I could only get it to fit in one way but will check. The collective expirience on all these forums here must be in the thousands of years and is a real treat reading answers even if I'm not that interested in the particular subjest.

In addition to what has been covered, check your oil bath and air intake, to make sure it is clear. I have seen these stopped up with dirt or squirel nests and effectively stop air flow to the engine. [Just pull the air intake from the carb and try starting it.]

Have you opened the main jet adjusting screw? Open this 1 full turn counter-clockwise and see if this improves the engine performance without the choke being used. It's the big screw at the bottom of the carburetor. Hal

Ian, In addition to what Rusty and Pappy have suggested, you might also check to see if the float is operating properly. If it is sticking in the up or closed position, or partially closed position, then you may not be getting enough fuel in the carb bowl to keep your engine running. You might try soaking it overnight in carb cleaner as opposed to gunk, as carb cleaner will cut the varnish that also could very well appear after 13 years of sitting idle. If you have good fuel flow through the line but no flow from the drain valve in your carb, that would be a good indicator. The thing is to not knock the carb around much while performing these tasks as you can jar the float loose and get a false reading of the problem.

The vent in the fuel cap could be plugged, try running it with cap removed.

If I were trying to solve your problem, hands on, I would start by checking the fuel flow from the tank to the carburetor. Remove the fuel line at the carb and turn on the fuel. If it flows freely, reinstall it and open the drain plug on the bottom of the carburetor. Turn on the gas and see if it flows freely. If so, probably still some passages plugged in the carburetor. It sounds as you have a weak fuel flow that provides a small amount of gas to the carburetor, but not enough flow to keep her running. In other words, your carburetor if running out of gas, even though there is fuel in the tank. Hope you get her running. The "H" is a nice machine.

If you look next to the butterfly there is a small passage that HAs to be open trust me.Sounds like the same problem we have had on several Farmalls here and cleaning this passage fixed it.
