F-20 backfireing thru carb

I am trying to get my F-20 running after I painted it. I went thru and cleaned the carb and mag. I can get it started but it wants to backfire thru the carb. I played with timeing and doesnt make a difference. I double checked the firing order and plug wires and played with carb settings nothing seems to make a difference. Any idea what might be causeing this?

I got it running this morning, the problem was with timeing. I just started from sratch with the timeing by refinding TDC and setting mag to match. I had tryed this a couple times last night but his time it worked. Thanks for the help Paul

Tried to time a magneto last night as well and had the same problem as you. Wired it as if 180 out - 3-4 1-2 and it fired right up. Guess I can't find TDC in the dark with both hands and a flashlight.

Was it running ok before the paint job?

Since it runs, does it run ok and just backfire some or does it have a miss?

How long did it sit while waiting for paint? maybe valve sticking from sitting.

Did you remove the mag for the paint job? Timing

Did the cap and/or wires get painted? crossfiring

Wires reinstalled in wrong order? Double and triple check dist rotation and firing order

Paul,

From what you say, the tractor was running fine before you worked on it. 9,999 times out of 10,000, this means the problem is something that you did, not some coincidental problem. So I would focus on timing, firing order of plug wires, and so forth, rather than on something like stuck valves....I have seen people (yours truly and others) check the firing order and plug wires more than twice and still get them wrong..

Inspect the mag cap for cracks between the contacts. Post back the direction the rotor rotates. Did it run ok before painting? Hal

Something I learned the hard way: Check the direction of the rotation of the "Distributor" to make sure you have the firing order in the same direction. If you have the firing order going in the opposite direction, two cyclinders will fire at the right time and two will backfire.

Leaking intake valve will cause backfiring through carburetor not exhaust valve.To identify which cylinder is leaking remove one spark plug wire at a time until the backfiring stops and that will be the cylinder with the leaking intake valve.

Sounds like timming. Check to see that #1 is at TDC and remove dist cap and make sure it is at the #1 wire.

I checked that, I tryed moving the adjustment at the coupleing each direction going to far one way and it will knock and to far the other way it will backfire thur the exhaust. Anything in between it backfires thur the carb. Paul

I agree. Sounds like a sticky valve. Check the compression first, then revisit the timing.
