Ok, am perplexed. Got new generator bearing and bushing for my "A" at local NAPA along with new voltage regulator. Have read about connecting things to the "BAT", "F", "L" and "A" terminals. My regulator has bat, f, and l but no A labeled. So am I right in assuming the A terminal is the one underneath the regulator without a label? Also, the old light switch has a bunch of resistors etc. built into it. Do you need the light switch electronics with the new regulator with 4 terminals on it? Thanks for any help.

I just went through this last week on a Super C. The wire from the "A" terminal goes to the voltage regulator lug by itself and mine was on the back of the removed regulator. It was labeled "GEN" on the voltage regulator I installed and I didn't see a label on the lug from the removed one. The regulator I removed was the factory original and it would make sense if it was labeled it would have been "A" like the generator. Don't forget to polize your generator when reinstalling it by jumping across the "BAT" and "A" or "GEN" lug at the regulator after the battery is hooked up. Good luck. Hal

Thanks for the help guys. This stuff is kind of mysterious to me. Am pretty good at the mechanicals, but electricals just don't seem to compute. I've got another generator w/o regulator off ebay and hope to be able to make one good unit from the two. Today I'll replace the bearing and bushing from the original (Napa $3.29 and 1.49 respectively), clean everything up real well, and see if it spins when applying power to it backwards. Then I'll attempt the wiring. I'm going to assume nothing was wired correctly when I got it (father-in-law where tractor came from is somewhat more electrically challenged than even I am). Do know it was hooked up negative ground and should have been positive. Do know young son left battery hooked up with ignition off when got tractor home and promptly burned out the light switch and melted almost all the wiring. Sooooo.... Have different cuttout type light switch that came with the ebay generator, and a new regulator (NAPA $29.49) and hopefully will have it all working by tonight. On the plus side, reading all the stuff on here and with the suggestions from John and others, I think I've got a pretty good idea on how to get our old Case VAO charging again too. First the Farmall though. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

I cant guarantee on your Voltage Regulator, but on most Ive ever seen that are 4 wire (BAT ARM FLD LOAD) VR's, the terminal on the bottom or off on one side all by itslef is indeed the ARM terminal, especially if the 3 on top are labeled BAT FLD and LOAD

No, if you replaced a charging system that only had a 2 wire Cutout Relay and used the light switch for Generator Field Current Control BUT YOU REPLACED IT WITH A FULL FLEDGED 3 OR 4 WIRE VOLTAGE RREGULATOR, the resistors in the light switch which were used for the Generators field current control ARE NOT THEN USED.

On 3 brush generators which I convert from 2 wire cutout relays over to Voltage Regulators, I set the Gens 3rd brush to the MAX charge position.

Go to this site; this has a wiring diagram of the type of regulator you are referring to. Link
