Hey Guys, My '61 140 cut off on Me and hasn't hit a lick since! Thought it might be switch or fuse but tested them and seem fine! Did notice ammeter doesn't show a discharge when switch is on so I checked that. Did have loose wire into it show put new terminal end on it and re-connected. Still nothing on ammeter! Am getting juice to coil 'cause I checked switch to see if was working and it seems fine. Off, no power, on 6.4 volts! Gettin' dark here so I'm quittin' for the night. Any suggestions for tommorow morning! Guess see if spark at plugs first thing, it shut down at once, no sputtering or misfiring, just cut off like a switch thrown! All ignition system, battery and fuel system new last fall when I started re-build! Hasn't had first problem since! This is first time! Thanks Guys! Scott

Had this happen to me while mowing. Checked power to the coil,Points,Condensor, checked the coil, checked the rotor, all were fine. Turned out to be the ground wire from the coil to the points on the distributor. Craig

Had same problem last week on my M. Thought the worst. Turned out to be the tensioning band on the points had broken.

good luck

Scott: I've read all of the responces to date and time. I'll just mention something I had happen with 130. Small gear in the distributor drive striped and rotor stopped turning. Check the rotor, see if it turns with engine. Not saying I'm right, but my tractor did do all yours is doing.

Scott, You don't mention if the starter motor turns or not in your post. I don't know if this might be it or not but certainly sounds like what I just experienced on my Super C. Went to start mine and just nothing from the starter. Checked the battery voltage and it was 6.3 volts with the same at the lug on the battery cable at the starter. The ammeter didn't move when I pulled the switch out and lights wouldn't lite either. Thought it must be the starter switch or starter motor since it wouldn't crank. Removed them off the tractor and had them checked and everything was fine. Put a different 6 volt battery I had in the shop from when I converted my H to 12 volts. Battery had been setting for almost a year but started the tractor right up. Been running great ever since. I guess a battery can have volts without having any amps. That battery was new in January 2005. Good Luck. Hal

Sorry, forgot to mention that. Yes lights work and show draw on ammeter, yes, the tractor turns over very good. Turns over very fast like it always did! It just flat out quit! Scott

140 man, When an engine is running fine and after a while just simply stops, it is in most cases coil failure. A coil may do ok until it heats up and then quit. It could also be the condensor, but your description souonds like a classic coil failure. Check it out.

Sounds like you have a different problem then I had. I would start with checking out the distributor and make sure it is turning when the engine turns with the starter. If that seems to be in order them I would guess some electrical component is on the blink. Almost have to change them all out to find it unless you have some spare items around you can test with. The coil, condenser, problem with points are all possibilities along with the cap and rotor. Just sounds like no spark to the plugs for some reason. Make sure the coil to distributor wire is making good contact at both ends. Also check the two small wires on the coil "+ and -" are ok and making good contact. Good luck and please post back with what you find. Hal

I would replace the condenser to if that fixes the problem. If it doesn't I would pull the coil wire out of the distributor cap and with the ignition switch on have someone crank over the
engine while you hold the coil wire within 1/4" of good ground and see if you have good fire.

Check the rotor to see if is ok. Is it getting fuel? See if it will start in the morning after the engine cools. Hal
