I can not find any realationship between model numbers and horsepower or etc. Does anyone know anything about it? Like 1206 or 1456. I do know a lot of different models carry the same engine. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

WHy on earth do you think there's a relationship between model numbers and horsepower? There really isn't as such, other than the bigger first numbers mean a bigger tractor. For instance:

404 is a smaller tractor than a 504. Both are in the 04 family- four cylinder tractors in the early 1960s.

706 is smaller than an 806, but bigger than a 504. 706 and 806 are in the 06 family from the mid 1960s. A 1206 is the same size as an 806, but turbocharged with quite a bit more HP, so IH just kinda fudged a 12 as being roughly the appropriate jump up. No science to it.

OK, I realize you are right in everything you say. The reason I ask in the first place, is back in the early days of tractor beginings to many maufactures would claim their tractor had more power than tractor X. So the Gov't got involved and made them comply with telling the truth. Thus is why there is a Hart Parr 18-36. The numbers mean, 36 belt hp & 18 drawbar hp. I know they all got away from that somehow, but I guess Ford was the only one to use model Number with a code in it. Now all of them mean nothing in this age.

Contact Ken Updike and get his "International Harvester Tractor 1939-1985. This is a data book that is not as detailed as Guy Fay's data book, but it covers all models up to the merger with Case. You will probably find no consistent pattern. THe various web sites have a lot of errors.
