Original Seat for 1946 M Farmall

When my father bought his 1946 M about 25 years ago, it had an aftermarket seat that I now want to replace. I see some M's with a seat which has a big spring directly underneath the seat pan, then a shock absorber type connection going toward the front mount. On other M's, I see a different seat that has a spring up front where it bolts to the tractor, then a curved support arching up to the seat, with what looks like a pretty small tool storage thing (not a box) on the support. I'm not sure if both were used on M's or what. Does anyone know what is correct for a 1946 M?

Both of Nat's posts are correct. The curved pipe seat as shown in Williamf's photo replaced a similar seat on the 39-40 H's and M's, it had the small spring in front but did not have the curved pipe, otherwise similar. IH had a deluxe seat, the one with the large spring and small shock in the middle. I believe the "Monroe" seat, the one with the large shock in the rear was available prior to the deluxe seat. The deluxe seat and the curved pipe seat were sold at the same time, with the deluxe seat being found on most of the later model. I was only 10 at the time, but my dad bought a 1947 H in Jan 1948 that had the Monroe seat. Far as I'm concerned it came from the factory that way, meaning that Monroe supplied IH with that seat, but it could have been dealer installed. I do not know whether the deluxe seat and the Monroe seat were sold at the same time. The battery under the seat first appeared on the C, and was then used on Stage 2 Super H's and M's and later models.

Should have said that the C seat was similar to that on the Stage 2 H and M except that it had a tool box underneath instead of a battery. Brain malfunctioning again, as I have one curved pipe seat, 2 C seats, one Monroe seat, 1 deluxe seat and 1 battery under seat, seat.

My '46 H has the original seat, same as the one on an M. It's a hard enough ride.
The "not a tool box" is big enough for a tow strap, a pair of gloves, and a can of Off.

Yep, that"s one of them. Am trying to decide whether to go after one like this, or look for the other one. I sort of like the little tool thing, but I might do the occasional club ride so softer might be nice too. Mainly I"d hate to put something on that was completely wrong for a 46 M, but it sounds like I"ll be okay either way. Great looking H you have there. Thanks for taking time to reply.

It's not a "storage thing." It's just sheet metal, part of the design.

The bent pipe with the spring in front is the original. Optional deluxe seat is the one with the shock absorber in front of the spring. Aftermarket seat is the one with the shock absorber behind the seat.

The seat shown in Nathan's post was an after market to relace the curved pipe with the tool compartment. We had a 47 M that came new with a Monroe seat, similar to Nathan's picture, except the shock was shorter and ahead of the big coil spring. My dad also had a H that he bought used that had the same type of Monroe seat. The Monroe seat may have been an option, but it came from IHC with the tractor.

Monroe Shock Company made a couple of different "comfy" seats for several tractor brands. It sounds like your M has one of these seats. The correct seat should be the one that has the small "storage thing" under the pan seat. It isn't as comfortable but it will be original. Brad

The ones with the big spring and no toolbox were used on the older ones. I think the toolbox ones started with the supers but maybe right before that. If you want to go original for 1946 then the big spring with no box is the correct one.

I think you're getting the different seats confused. Later Supers, as well as '00 and '50 series tractors, had the BATTERY box under the seat. In '60 series tractors, it was changed to a tool box.

Originally, Hs and Ms had a long, bent pipe for a seat frame. These had very little in the way of suspension, and were a very rough ride. These had a sheet metal area on them that could be confused as a "tool box."

I know the some of the 400's had tool boxes under the seat. I think this may have been an option on the later M's or supers as I have seen them selling on ebay.

Nathan: That "tool box" under the seat on the 400 is really the battery box! The 400 had a small box over the belt pulley. At least my Dad"s 400 did in 1956.
The C, Super C, 200, 230"s all had a tool area under the seat.
