Re: What will a 450 head do to my M ? in reply to Hank L, 09-07-2005 07:03:00

Hank, The Hp increase depends on what head you have currently. If you have the old kerosine head, you can pick up a good 7-10 hp pretty easy just from the compression increase. if you have the 8060D head, which is the "high compression gasser head" for the M, you mite pick up another 5 hp. The 450 heads work well with firecrater pistons, if you have that style of pistons, it will help quite a bit, but Im betting that it either has flatops, or stepped head pistons. It is a basic swap, and should bolt right up, the only real difference is the crank case breather line that goes up to the air cleaner, 450 heads use a valve cover vent, where the M"s use a brass fitting in the back of the head, use the 450 valve cover and a piece of rubber line to reconnect the breather. The 450 heads have a higher compression chamber, larger intake, and exhaust ports, so it would pay to have the 450 manifold so it is a matched set. Chad
