John T. or other knowledgeable folks, a question. If when you motor test the generator, it turns very slowly with good ground and hot wire to armature post, but speeds up considerably when you ground the field (and stays speeded up when you drop the ground to the field) what's going on/wrong? Do I have wires hooked up wrong? Did I polarize incorrectly? Is it just shot? Didn't produce any juice when tested at the local NAPA today, but thought I would do the motor test tonight anyhow... just don't know what the test is telling me. All help is appreciated. Stan
Oh, got a second generator off ebay and it did the same thing when I tried it tonight.

I have an old garden tractor that uses the generator as a starter and after the engine starts
it becomes a generator. It has a 14hp B&S engine. Never had a problem with the generator, just belts breaking and you need to unbolt the drive shaft from the engine to install the belt.

If it runs I see no reason why it won't charge, if you ground it out when the tractor is running do you draw a little spark??

I guess I always figured if they will run they should charge. Never tried grounding the field to make them run faster but quite often ground the field to make them charge.

WaaaaHooo!!!!! Thank you! Thank You! Figured would fire it up tonight and see if I got lucky. Remembered Cowman's post about grounding the field and WooHoo! it started charging. Kept charging when I took the wire away from the field post too. Charged at about 10 for a minute or so then went down gradually and stayed at about 1 1/2 to 2. I was thrilled, but thought would probably have to do the ground thing each time. Went in the house to celebrate with the wife and when I came back out and started her up again..... it did the same thing: without having to ground the field this time. I think it might be healed! If someone will take pity on a simple old country guy and explain why it took off and started working when the field was grounded, I would be really greatful. Have to get the Case VAO charging too and would like to know what I did right and why it worked. Thanks to all again.
Stan
