AIR PRE-CLEANERS

I tried posting this questions a day or two ago along with another but got no response to this one, so please allow me to gine it a new separate try.

My Super C has a rather neat top on the air intake tube. It's not the plain mushroom cap, nor is it the Ball jar cap. Rather it has a clear plastic cylinder that collects the dust inside. The bottom of the cap has fins to centrifugally separate the dust and the top is removable. Problem is, with 50+ years of heat and sunshine, the plastic is distorted badly and isn't clear anymore. Does anybody refurbish these or offer reproductions?

If you're talking about the Donaldson plastic bowl, then yes. Just got a new one for a 240 about two months ago. About $15. Any good dealer should be able to get you one. Your's probably has the precleaner off of a 240 on it, since the C/Super C/200/230/240 family had an oddball air cleaner pipe diameter. The piece that goes right under the bowl and fits on the pipe for these tractors is very rare. The bowl is commonly avalible, and the aluminum top piece is very similar to some Deeres (I think, the used replacment I got was green) and should be avalible new from a Deere dealer.

Leon, Please see my earlier post and as I was looking farther down this forum I saw the post from Sloroll and the picture of the Super C Val had restored along with your request for a source. The pre-cleaner I made reference too as the third type appears to be the one on the pictured tractor. I gave you the part no. of the bowl in the earlier post. Good luck. Hal

Leon, In my Super C parts catalog there are 3 different pre-cleaners shown as being available as a special item for the SC. One is the common Donaldson glass jar type, another has like an inverted plastic bowl with a plastic base which appears to just be pushed on over the tube and a third one which is called a detachable sleeve type which has a base which is secured to the tube with a metal clamp and has a long threaded stud to which the upper parts are secured with a wing nut. From your description as a "clear plastic cylinder" it appears that the third one I noted is what you might have. The part no. of the clear cylinder is noted as 361 409 R91. If you have access to a parts catalog look in the attachments section for these pre-cleaners. Hope this helps and if you could provide more detail on the base and top I would be happy to see if it appears to be one of these units. Hal

Now we're on to something. It's approaching 2 weeks and binderbooks still doesn't have my op manual nor parts catalog to me, so I appreciate the help. Indeed, the third type you describe seems to be the one I have. Can you tell fropm the parts book if the plastic sleeve is a separate piece, separate from the base with the clamp? The plastic sleeve seems to be captured in the lower part by rolling the steel around it's lip.

Is there a web site one can go to to see if a part number is available from Case-IH and what is it's price?

Yes, it appears to be a separate part. There is also another part which is identified as a shield. It is shown with the top and wing nut as item 11. Item 12, the part I think you are looking for, appears to be a straight sided cylinder on the outside with an inverted cone in the center. It has a "dust level" mark on the outside. It also appears to have a series of moulded-in fins in the bottom for the air to enter. Item 12 is named "body, pre-cleaner" in the parts catalog. This is all shown on page 174 of TC-44B which is the parts catalog I obtained from binder books. As for as checking it's available through CaseIH I am unaware of any website assessible by the public for availability. I would suggest contacting Ken at Carter & Gruenewald Co. who has excellent resources for finding it if still available from CaseIH or in another dealer's inventory. His contact info is 1-866-327-6255 and email at info@cngco.com. A few other possible contacts would be Justin Weber at (618) 783-4102 or (507)434-0876 and Tom Underwood at (785) 749-5231 both of whom deal in NOS IH items. A couple of others who do tractor restorations and seem to know where to obtain things if they don't have them are Ron at Pilot Knob Restorations, (815) 777-0826 and Mark Woods at Mark's Tractors (217) 694-4735. Hope this helps and advise if anything else is needed. Good Luck. Hal

Leon, I have a Farmall 340 that has that type of aircleaner on it and it appears to be original equipment. The tractor is out at the home place so I can't check the size of the intake tube but I think if you went to Case/IH and asked for the bowl for a 340 you would get the right one. I do have a parts book thats out there also and if I get out there I will check for the part number. The 340 has the C135 engine probably the same as your C. LOL PUTTER

IH used Donaldson air cleaners, as did CAT. I recently purchased the plastic piece for a D4-D from a CAT dealer.

I'm certain it will still be available. You are probably right, it may have been available on a 200 or newer tractor.

What you have is a pre-cleaner that was manufactured AFTER your super c was built. Quite a few of these ended up on Farmall Hs and Ms also. I think they became standard equipment when the 460s and 560s were introduced. I know that new replacements are available. You might ask at your Case-IH dealer, or check with a dealer that does on-line sales. I have seen new plastic bowls on e-bay, but the ones I have seen would be too large for your application.

The pre-cleaner fits the 1 3/4" air intake tube of the Super C. I'd guess the H and M have larger intake tubes. The IH logo can still be seen on the plastic. Maybe it came in with the 200?

Leon,To try and clean it up try plastic windsheild cleaner for motercycles, or rear window polish for convertables. (plain car wax will work but it will take more hours than I would ever put in it .)

Though I'd like to save the original, even if I could polish the cloudiness out of the plastic, it's badly warped too. Apparently it set too close to the muffler for 50+ years of heat exposure.
