Any Idea why Case offers a new gauge for my 1952 H but doesn't offer an adapter to make it usable. The original (which is broken) has a special female thread that accepts a compression fitting, while the new gauge has a 3/16th NPT male nipple. I've been to Napa & Power Train shops I can't find anything. What Gives? This has to be a common problem. How can I find some standard / practicle solution.

To all following this thread. I have found a tube to pipe compression fitting that works. It is a 1/4" tube to 1/8" female pipe fitting. So all your notes suggseting that the gauge was either 1/8 or 1/4 was correct. It was 1/8th.

I have great oil pressure with new gauge installed.

Bermuda Ken left a good IH part number if anyone has this problem in the future. Thanks everone!

Another way to determine pipe size is to measure
the inside diameter of the fitting on your gauge.
If it's 1/4 pipe the hole in the pipe fitting will measure 1/4" in diameter. All pipe sizes are
determined by the diameter of the hole. Its like using your wrenches, you remove so many nuts and bolts you know which wrench to use and the same is working with pipe and tube fittings. You can glance at a pipe fitting and know the size. Hal

Re: Farmall H oil gauge........adapter here!!!!! in reply to jimmer, 09-09-2005 08:57:19
Stop by any IH dealer and ask for part number 257523R1. This is the adapter needed to fit the gauge to your old line without modification.

Forget this non sense of cutting/modifying the gauge and or line that others suggest. This fitting will provide a perfect fit connection.

jimmer,

I found the same problem when I got my new oil guage. I took the guage and my oil line up to my NAPA dealer here in town and was able to match up some couplers to get it working.

I THINK, not sure, that the parts I needed were:

NAPA part number 6200X4 fitting and
NAPA part number 3300X2 coupling.

This should be the correct stuff you need if I"m reading the right receipt. Goback to NAA and see ifthis will work for you. Good luck,
Larry

Thanks Larry in CO. I may try this. I know I have the right part coming now from McMaster-Carr. I'll have it Monday. But if I get to eager and can't wait, I'll take these numbers back to napa this weekend to see what they come up with. Maybe the first guy to help me there was a card shy of a full deck!

I ran into the same problem on both my tractors. Here's what I did:

1 - Cut off odd size threaded coupling at the gage end of the line (used a tubing cutter).

2 - Purchased a compression adapter fitting (1/4" OD tube x 1/4" FPT) and 1/4" threaded coupling.

3 - Installed the compression adapter and on the cut off end of the oil line, then screwed the coupling onto the adapter.

4 - Screwed the new gage into the 1/4" coupling.

The new gages have been working and have been leak-free for for 7 or 8 years...

There was never a 3/16 pipe fitting, either 1/8 or 1/4". The OD of a 1/8 pipe measures .405"
and 1/4 pipe is .540". I think it would be 1/8 pipe threads since they used 1/4" copper tubing
for the oil line. Take your gauge to NAPA or to any auto parts store will have a compression fitting that goes from tubing to female pipe that
will connect your gauge to the tubing. See if the OD on the gauge fitting is near what I posted
above. I have one of those fittings, but I need to know which size you have. You can have it free. Hal

Doesn't the block have a pipe thread where you can bush the NPT thread on your gauge to the NPT thread on the block..

I have never seen a 3/16 NPT thread, nor have I ever heard of it.

El Torro & Dave Id,
Thanks for your reply, I took old & new gauge to Napa and they tried all sorts of fittings & couldn't find one to work. I asked what the nipple thread size was on the new gauge & they checked it to be 3/16 NPT. I thought that was unusuall as well and figured it to be 3/8th npt. But the NAPA guy said it was a 3/16 fitting that fit on the new gauge but it didn't fit the existing compression fitting on the oil line. So even after going to Napa I am still in the dark.

I think I am going to fab out of brass round stock a coupler that is 3/8 npt on one side and 7/16 - 24 which is a standard compression size on the other end. Hopefully this will work. Does anyone have any experience with this idea?

I don't think they ever used a 3/8 pipe fitting on
that small gauge. You should try a 1/8 or 1/4 pipe coupling to see if it will screw on that gauge. You can not tell pipe size by guessing
since 1/8 pipe will measure .405," that's more than 3/8's of an inch in diameter. 1/4 pipe is .540" in diameter and that's just over 1/2 inch.
What is the diameter of the fitting on the gauge?
Can you post a picture of the threads on the gauge? Since BOB M has installed new gauges
on his tractors I think it would be 1/4 pipe. Hal

What Hal says.Gauges are usually 1/8,sometimes 1/4.3/8 is BIG.Tubing, later 1/8,early sometimes 1/4.Any good parts or fluid power shop should fix you up.I'm guessing you have what is very close to weatherhead 'threaded sleeve'-the nut on the tube has external threads? I've run into them on IH.Can't believe the dealer can't-or won't- help.Adapter is avalable or get standard compression adapter, cut end off line, use the new nut & sleeve.Just need the 2 sizes.HTH Chip

Sorry, missed Bobs post,it's what I was thinking.I have found both male & female connectors,If length or one less fitting matters.

Thanks all who helped. Problem solved. See McMaster.com...

They have a brass tube to pipe fitting that will work. It is for a 1/4 od tube to 1/8, 1/4, or 3/8 pipe. They were only about a $1.50 a piece so I got one of each. One will have to work. The other two will set in my shop until the end of times probably, but for 3 bucks, who cares.

Are those fittings tube to male pipe or tube to female pipe. If they're male pipe threads you're going to need a pipe coupling so you can connect
the tube fitting to the gauge. Home Depot has nice brass pipe couplings. Hal

Wrap those male pipe fittings with some teflon tape including the gauge. See how easy that was. That tractor will look good with a new gauge. Hal

Hal,

I got this tractor about four years ago from my Grandfathers estate sale. He was in a nursing home and when he found out I got it he cried with joy! I wish he was still alive to see it now as it is in show room condition. This gauge is my last item outside of the hitch to restore. This once working horse will now live the good life for generations to come. My 6 year old son proudly refers to it as his tractor. He gladly tells everyone who inquires that it is his when I die. I almost thinks his wishes for that day to come too soon to suit me! Thanks again for your help. jim

Let us know what the pipe size is on your gauge once you get your fittings. Good Luck with your tractor. If you blink your eyes a few times your son will be driving that tractor before you know it. Hal
