Just get the biggest one you can afford, I picked up a Ingersol Rand 24.3 CFM at 175 psi last year and love it, when I sand blast I hold the trigger until I run out of sand or am finished and the compressor pumps up and shuts off with no trouble with the sand blaster going

CNKS has it. If you're doubting your need for 2-stage, don't, go with the 2-stage. I tell my friends 'whatever you think will meet your demands, then go at least 1/2 again larger on the capabilities'. If you don't notice a lack of capabilities, you done right. Many folks (myself included) get started with what they think they can afford then wind up spending more playing catch-up.

Ball park minimum size: 60 gal, 15 cfm at 90 psi, 2 stage preferred. This will run anything except a sandblaster. Some HVLP guns take as much as 12-13 cfm (at 40-50 psi), some less. You might think this is overkill, but it really isn't. Buy the biggest you can afford.

As gene says, it depends on the tip size. Anything smaller than the specs I quoted will be very slow. Also, the smaller ones do not have a 100% duty cycle, so if you have a small compressor, it will will run continuously for a long time, shortening it's life. I have two I attemped to tie together, didn't work very well, so the newer one I use for sandblasting puts out 24 cfm at 100 psi -- it works but is slow.

The air requirements for a sand blaster depends on size of nozzle for instance 3/16equires 40cfm @80PSI 1/4 needs 80cfm@80psi. I use the 3/16 nozzle and does good job on tractors and machinery. Have a smaller pot using a 3/32 nozzle and is handy for smaller objects.

I have the HVLP spray gun and it does a nice job
spraying and you don't lose very much paint from overspray. They do require a lot of air and a very good compressor. You will need a compressor that will provide at least 10 CFM @ 40-45psi. Ask what the air requirements are needed for your spray gun. You don't want to sit around waiting for the air compressor to catch up so you have enough air. You will like the HVLP spray gun
after a little practice. Hal

Any air tool you buy, including paint guns, will have a label stating the CFM (cubic feet per minute) required to operate that tool. The air compressor you buy must be capable of supplying at least the required CFM. The air compressor will also have a label stating it's capacity. Do not be mislead by the horsepower of the compressor, it means nothing. Also, think ahead, what other air tools might you want to use in the future? Buy a compressor with enough capacity to handle what you might want in the future.
