Questions on Cotton Picker engine, Red Diamond?

I have a McCormick Cotton Picker 214A that has, I believe, a Red Diamond engine in it. The engine is stuck, and I am about to do some exploratory surgery on it to find out why. I am guessing moisture up the tail pipe over the many years.

My quesions are:

Does this engine have replacable sleeves like other tractor engines?

Is this a common engine?

What else will swap into its place?

Can I get parts readily, from NAPA maybe? Piston and sleeve kits?

Thanks for any info.

John,
If you want to use another engine rather than overhaul yours, the external demensions are the same on 220, 240, 263, 282, and 301. I think your covers, housings, and accessories will fit on most versions of any of these to make them mount in your picker without too much trouble. Engines from pickers from 214/20,a's, 414/20, or 416/22 would be easiest. Combine engines next. Tractors may have different crankshaft flywheel mounting.

Sleeves? I don't know. The engines in the 460/560/706?? or C221/263/301 were also Black Diamond engines, I think. C301 is sleeveless. Service manual says that the "early" 221/263 had sleeves, "late" sleeveless -- guess you won't know until you look. I bought a Sealed Power kit for my C221 460, and had the machinest put the sleeves in. He said he had to peel the old ones out, meaning I would have had problems if I tried it myself, due to lack of proper equipment. Most good parts places/machine shops have parts manuals that go back to the beginning of time, I imagine parts are readily available. Don't know if I call NAPA one of those or not, depends on the individual store.

Would 'early' be 1960? I think this is when the picker was made, assuming it is the original engine.

I don't know, as I'm in over my head on this one, but I believe all 460's/560's had sleeves. My mention of the 706 above is wrong as it used the C263 or C291. The 806 used the 301, which according to my book is sleeveless -- I don't know where the 240 fits into this, as a quick scan does not list it as a tractor engine. Harold H should be the expert on this.

My book has the BD-240 engine listed for the 214 cotton picker. Not sure if has sleeves. Hal

You are correct, it is a Black Diamond.

Was the Black Diamond made by IH? Years ago the Reo truck used the Diamond Reo. The military used
a lot of these trucks with this engine and they were sleeved. Hal
