Scenerio: This is my father in law's Farmall 130, he is ill so I know little about this tractor. I have never worked on an old tractor before and I thought it would be fun to get it up and running. All I know is the hyraulics haven't worked for years (maybe as long as 10) and the tractor hasn't been started in 3 or 4 years. New battery and the tractor started right up. Figured I'd check all the fluids and start changing them since I know my father in law hasn't been maintaining it and god only knows how long its been. Oil level was high and very black, didnt think much of it other then it needed to be changed and figure he had added to much oil at some point. Then I checked the hydraulic fluid and quickly figured out why the hydraulics didn't work, it was bone dry. I added one gallon of hy-tran which filled it, used the hydraulics alittle and then checked the fluid level again. Now it is low and could use maybe 2 quarts. It is only supposed to hold 8 1/4 pints. Now I understand why the oil level is so high!

Questions:
Hydr pump needs new seals, correct?
Is it easy to replace the seals, and what else will I need (ie any gaskets)?
What is the proceedure?
How long will it take?
How bad is it for the engine to have been running with hydraulic fluid mixed in the oil as this was probably occuring for years?
Can I still run it if I drain the hydraulic system and change the oil and only use it for pulling until I have a chance to fix the seals?
Anything else I need to know?

Sorry for the long post, but I'm a newbie.

I bet the gear is wallered out some too. If it is it will never stay tight. I had my nephew take the gear to votech and re sleave it for a project. New one is a hundred bucks.

I am assuming the 130 is the same as the Super A, if not forget what I say. Easy job, the pump needs an o-ring on the the shaft, the shaft will be grooved, meaning you need a $25 speedy or redi-sleeve for it. But the hole the shaft goes thru will have to be enlarged for the sleeve -- best to let a machine shop get an accurate measurement and do it right -- should be about an hour at whatever rate they charge. There is a remote possibility that the pump has a regular oil seal in it, if so you don't need to enlarge the hole. Easy job, just remove the pump and disassemble, a diagram would be helpful, your CIH dealer can print one off for you. You might as well replace any other gaskets and seals in the pump, won't cost much -- I don't have a 130, and there was more than one pump, so I can't give you the part numbers. I don't know if the engine is damaged or not, fix the pump and run it, then you will know. If you don't want to fix it right away, you can put engine oil in the reservoir, and keep the oil drained to the proper level in the crankcase. You cannot run the pump if it is dry, you will fry it in a few minutes (if it isn't already). A rebuilt pump is likely $4-600, I haven't priced one. You can remove the pump and have a plate made to cover the opening, also.

OK I removed the pump and found out that the nut holding the drive gear on the shaft had actually somehow worked itself off and was just rattling around at the end of the shaft and up against the front engine block cover. Needless to say the nut is trashed and so is the washer. The good news is the the shaft appears to be in good shape and I think all I need is a new ring seal. How this happened I have no idea.

I believe the washer is suppose to be one that you bend up against the nut to secure it, or at a minimum a lock washer. -- been long enough that I don't remember.

Yes it is that type of washer, but now it is trashed. Do you think a regular lock washer would work?
