Where is the serial number on a Farmall B? I have heard on the seat assembly but what if it doesn't have a seat? Is there a serial number anywhere else on the tractor? Do any of the casting codes tell you when it was made?

The tractor serial number would be on the inside of the left-side seat support bracket, stamped on a plate which is riveted to the bracket. The tractor serial number won't be anywhere else on the tractor.

On earlier tractors, the engine serial number matched the tractor serial number. This would apply to serial numbers 501 through 201000, according to the IH Tractor Data Book by Guy Fay. If your tractor is in this group, and has the original block, you can get the number from the engine.

The engine serial number is stamped on a raised boss on the right-hand side of the block, below #1 sparkplug and kind of behind the magneto. It should have a FAB prefix.

Well, here is another question for you. If there is not a serial number how can I tell this is not a BN without a seat being in place. Would the engine serial numbers on the earlier models reflect the model? FABN instead of FAB? Either way, can you give me a crystal clear measurement I can relay to my seller which would tell both of us what he has to offer? Seller is a little hard to get a hold of (no email, etc) and tractor is over two hours away. If there is a good clear measurement we can take which I can easily describe to him via telephone that would be great.
It is the strangest thing, I keep looking for a relatively common B and I keep finding nothing but BN's. Sure appreciate the help.

An afterthought, is the distance between the fenders different on B vs BN? That would be an easy one to have him check.
