I just put a new harness on a repainted super a. I read almost all of the previous posts and checked out your handy sites so I believe the wiring is correct. The problem is that when I start the tractor the ammeter goes directly to the post on the discharge side. I've taken the lead from the gen lug on the cutout and the meter shows the generator charging, but as soon as I put the wire back I am back to discharge. I have done the polarity routine. Is it possible to change the wiring to the cutout to reverse the polarity? Any other suggestions?

Alan, generally speaking if the tractors not running and turning on the lights makes the ammeter swing to discharge, the ammeter polarity at least is correct. HOWEVER thats not the end of the story. If wired correct the ammeters SUPPLY terminal has but one connection and thats to the battery or starter,,,,,while its other LOAD terminal is wired to loads like lights n ignition (via switches) PLUS the BAT terminal on the cutout relay or Voltage Regulator. Is yours wired that way????? ????? ???

Next, some cutout relays are bi polar and work at Positive or Negative ground simply by swapping the BAT and GEN terminals. However, the BAT and GEN terminal on the cutout relay ARE CORRECT FOR AND ASSUME YOURE AT THE CORRECT POLARITY.

Insure ammeter wiring then see if all your polarities (battery n relay) are correct. The relay MUST be wired to correspond to your ground and if it doesnt have the Pos or Neg labeling like the bi polar models (i.e ONLY has BAT and GEN labels) its not gonna work right if the tractors polarity has been reversed !!!!!

I am wired as you say, providing that the supply is on the post marked neg. and the load is marked pos. In other words neg battery post is coming to the neg post on the ammeter. It will be a few days til I respond again since I am going to the First State Tractor show in Delaware for the weekend.

Go down about 10 posts on this board to
FARMALL SUPER A CONVERSION TO 12 VOLT. Check Bob M's Reply and ask him your question. I wire all my tractors using his diagrams
no matter what the color.

You probably have the gauge wired back wards, thats why is shows a discharge when its really chargeing.

When I turn on the lights with motor off, the ammeter reads discharge?
