I am restoring an H in FFA. I was wondering how the choke was originally worked. do you have to get off and choke it then hit th push button or what or is a choke cable custom. I put my 12 volt battry on and my generater shorted(engineer one to work or has this happened to you guys before)

Like Nebraska Cowman said, it's a rod back to the bottom of the steering post that allows you to adjust the choke from the operator's seat. On my '47 H, it goes through a bracket behind the air cleaner - facing the air cleaner from the left (clutch) side of the tractor. Personally, I'd try to find one at a boneyard and, since they commonly get additional bends from use, find an H that's got one that doesn't look too malformed and mimic that.

Here's a link to Bob M's wiring diagrams that may help you out:

Luke, Regardless if the tractor has a simple 2 wire cutout relay or a 3 or 4 wire Voltage Regulator, the cutout relay or the cutout relay portion of a VR should have been normally OPEN whereby there shouldnt have been any electrical path to the Generator from the battery allowing it to draw current. Common problems on a bad cutout relay or VR could be stuck/burned/carboned contacts which would allow a curent path. They are designed to be normally open unless and until the Gens output voltage exceeds that of the battery then they close but open otherwise so the battery dont discharge through the generator when shes turned off.

Other considerations may be the battery polarity were reversed????? Did you connect the new battery at Positive or Negative ground cuz many tractors were originally Positive grounded but some got changed over the years?? Some cutout relays are bi polar and work at either polarity simply by reversing their wires. Also, was/is the tractor 6 or 12 volts?? do you know or know if it got converted???

Correct voltage n polarity issues need to be known and dealt with accordingly, but Im more of a John Deere man and know their original voltages n polarity better then an IHC, sorry. Bob has good data n diagrams etc on all the the IHC stuff.

Don't know Luke. The regulator (or cutout)points should have been open to keep the generator from shorting. Yes, I have had it happen before. the points stick shut and the generator gets hot, drains the battery, could start a fire. sometimes you can get the regulator working again but I never trust them. The H was originaly 6 volt positive ground but lots have been changed over the years. There should be a pull rod on the choke coming back to the steering post. I have made them out of heavy wire.
