Don't fill your M gas tank full!

Well, I bought some cheap gas earlier in the week and went ahead and filled my tank up on the M. Didn't fill it all the way up but within an inch or so from the top. Well, I think about a gallon ended up shooting out of the vent hole before it was all said and done. I kept expecting it to stop but it was like old faithful spurting out the vent hole. I mowed for a 1/2 hour or so and it finally stopped. I hosed it down after I was done and parked it.

Just thought I would share that in case someone else hasn't already made this mistake. I have the old style gas cap, would the tall ones make any difference?

Thanks, Nathan

When I drove those tractors as a kid, We filled then with a hand pump from a 55 gal barrel, just pumped until it ran over. Always gas in the face until it used a gallon or so. I thought it was normal. (I don't smoke). Have seen that happen with the new style caps also. Never lost a gallon though.

All gas tanks and batteries need plenty of space left in the top for expansion of the fluid when it heats up. Otherwise it gets pushed out. Sometimes makes a mess; sometimes worse. How much space? Whatever it takes to keep it from overflowing. Radiators the same unless they have a separate reservoir.

That is the exact reason that the tall caps were installed, and they do work.

The vapor pressure of some gasolines is much lower than yesteryear. this means thatsome parts boil at near room temperature. The effect is what you saw. The high caps are a partial answer they seperate liquid from vapor in the chambers of the cap.
Winter gasoline formulas are even worse. Go for a new cap. See the threads here for Free gas caps. Do not drive or run the unit with fuel spewing out. That is a fireball with you in it.
Be safe. JimN

Don't waste your time Gary. Those free gas caps are a fallacy.

I'm sure you were really just joking and referring to the long shipping time. I'd have to count, but I've received at least 15 caps. You just have to wait long enough.

This is avalable on the Main Page of the Cub Manual Server at www.cleancomputes.com/Cub/index.html . Print it off, fill it in and mail it. Be prepared though, depending on the amount of requests received it may be about 4 - 5 months before you see it.

Anthony Wayne Services, only ships when a specific threshold has been reached. A shipment went out about 6 weeks ago, judging by all the happy comments on many different forums lately..

I meant a 1950 C. But you probably knew that, huh?
