686 Question

If you had two equal tractors, would you rather have a D310 german diesel or the D312 american diesel. Which is better and why.

I looked at nother 686 today with the 310 today. It would not start without the ether assist. That can't be good.

My 686 has the 312, seems to have plenty of power and it will start down to 15 or so with out being plugged in. Now my 756 with the 310 is a different story, it likes the either or block heater below 50. But once you get it running it gets great fuel ecomomy and has plenty of power. Its the only diesel I've ever been around were you can hear the altinator buzz when its idling its so quiet. As Allen said the german sure has a bellar to it when under load, reminds me of my 706 gas with a straight pipe. As for the german fuel pump you can upgrade to a new Standyne JDB pump kit for about $900 which is sometimes cheaper than rebuilding the german Bosch pump. Makes it better starting but looses some fuel economy. One drawback of the 312 is the price of an overhaul kit $1700 verses $1000 for the 310. If it were me I would grab that 686, they are a sweet tractor and the german is easy to live with once you get to know their quirks.

Hey Carp for my money i would have to go with the 312 as the 310's the parts for the injection pump are getting hard to find and like all hard to find parts they cost more also if a 310 is getting hard to start even in the cold start mode then one of two things, one it needs rebuilt or two the head pressure on the pump is low . As Allen was sayen the 312 is a bit guttless but that is because they need a bit of tweeken to get them to come to life . I have worked on them - the 656 -686 handy tractor but i sure would not want one for a tillage tractor or tryen to do what we were doing yesterday pullen sillage wagons it was all my 806 wanted . Should have had the 1486 on the chooper and the 1066 haulen wagons .

Hi Carp,

They smoke on startup, need the either when it gets below 50 degrees and are nosier than you can ever imagine when they are pulling hard.

Even so, if you don't want that 310, let me know where it is and I'll come get it, 'cause I've never been so impressed with an IH tractor in all my life when it comes time to work and I've owned a lot of 'em.

Bottom line is, if you are just going to use it to putz around with, I'd leave 'er set 'cause you'll hate it. But, if you're after a workhorse, you'd better grab that thing before someone else finds out it's for sale.

I bought a brand spankin' new 766 with a 360D in '75; this old 686 with the 310D having 7034 hours a couple of years ago. The 310 impresses me more.

A 100 guys told me that it wouldn't handle an 18.5 Vibrashank. Baloney! Couldn't even get 'er to smoke at 5 mph. I just can't say enough good about 'em.

Guys,I have been around all them engines in all them different tractors and they are all excelent engines. I can't say one is better than the other.

We had a 686 with a 310. That engine is absolutly bulletproof. The 310 powered 686 was the most fuel-efficient IH tractor under 165 horsepower. That being said, would I own another 686 with the 310...? No. Not unless I lived somwhere that never sees a temp below 40 degrees. I've been around 310 powered 706's and 756's that started better. Even the old 826's will start faster.

Carp: My experience has been whether it be 310 versus 312 or 358 versus 360 the two American engines have by far the most torque and they start better especially in colder weather. I think the German engines may and note I say (may) have more hours of service between rebuilds. I've heard some excellent reports on longeviety on these German engines, however I'm convinced the American engines can match it with proper service.

I owned a 656D being a 282 engine. I have operated a 666 with 312 engine and two separate 686 with 310 engines. This was back when these tractors were relatively new. The 666 would start better and had much better power than any of the others.

I farmed in an area that in the 1950s IH probably enjoyed 80% of the market. That became eroded over items like fast hitch, 560 rear ends, 66 series cavitation in 400 engines. The straw that broke the camels back, so to speak was early 886 had 360 American engines. The dealer enjoyed great sales with the 886, however 85% of them came with 358 German engines. Today there is no CaseIH dealer in that area. Interesting too those IH tractors are gone as well. Need I say more.

I have a 666 with the 312 engine and it is a really good tractor always starts even in winter. One of the best starting diesels I have had.

I had a 706 with the German 310 that I liked very well. Only diesel I ever owned.

in my opinnion the 312 is the toughest motor ih ever built - 10 my 686 will start without help, fuel eff easy on fuel. i ran my first 666 312 dsl 210 dynoed hp pulled 18 ft 470 disc , 12 foot chissel plow over 600 acres for 5 seasons , broke one set of spider gears and cross,in 1978 i had a 666 we farmstock pulled with a 13 mm rotery pump we beat a lot of 1066.s and 4430 jds, same tractor i won atpa points with in 1994. my experence with the 310 , they are very fuel eff for there hp but very exp to work on , we had a plate made and put a 37 roosamaster pump on a 706 german i had made a nice starten 310

injection pump way overpriced , they wont start,
