When driving on the road in 5th gear, the front wheels (tricycle type close together) wobble like castors at speeds well below 15 mph. This causes me to drive more slowly than I would like. Is this normal or is there a way to fix this?

One of the most common causes, and most commonly overlooked places for the play that causes front-wheel wobble is the little ball bearing on the very front of the steering shaft where it terminates at the front of the bolster gearbox.
Look for the obvious places first, and keep eliminating whatever play you can. The wobble may be due to the accumulated wear in several areas. One thing you can easily do when searching for the cause(s) is to remove the hood and take it for a drive. Watch both sections of the steering shaft and see what they do when the wobble occurs.

Hi Trevor, I was able to get quite a bit of slop out of my steering by just tightening the parts of my steering system. Tighten at the gear at the top of the bolster. Remember that you"re tightening against bearings so just take out play. On some if you have a complete gear (teeth all of the way around) you can turn it around to get better teeth on the gear. If you"ve found that that"s where the problem is. Also you need to check your front wheels to make sure they"re at the narrowest option available. This will make it easier to steer and less succeptable to "wobble". And pressure, all of that stuff.

Unevenly worn or mismatched tires, worn upper or lower bearings in the bolster, worn steering or worm gear, worn universal joint...all could cause wobble. Check the archives. There's mountains of information on the subject.
Is it normal? Yeah, it is. You can still fix it though.
