Super W6 high-low?

I have been working on dad's Super W6 trying to get all the kinks out to do some antique pulling. I was talking to him last night about the tractor last night when he mentioned it to have high-low. Now take into consideration that he hasn't touched the tractor for 10 years. If it has a high-low I would think it would have to be the M&W 9 speed kit because I've never known of a IH with factory high low except the TA which the tractor does not have. If it is a nine speed kit where would the shifter be located. There is a lever located in front of the clutch pedal and he says its a hand clutch, maybe M&W for live PTO or just a straight hand clutch. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks JaredM

Jared: Are you sure it doesn't have TA? Super W6 built in 1954 could have TA. The chassis had the same changes as made on the SMTA. These 1954 SW6 have chanel frame along the engine same as Farmalls, whereas older SW6 and W6 had the one piece cast chassis. Of course the serial number should give it to you.

Jared: Serial number is the one that can tell you quickly. SW6 probably has it on left side of clutch housing. It will be roughly 2" by 4" plate riveted to casting. Find the serial number then go to left of this page under research & info, click on serial numbers, then International then SW6. That will give beginning serial number for each year tractor was in production.

If you don't know or cant find serial number go to casting codes. Each casting on the tractor has one. It's a series of numbers and a letter cast in place and looks like a round head screw cast between digets. It gives day and month by number and year by letter. X was 1952, Y was 1953, Z was 1954 and A was 1955. You can go both ways from that, but V was not used. Bear in mind casting could be made few months before tractor.

Now if you go to casting part number, it will likely be 5-6 numbers ending in R1, R2 or R3. Problem with this you will have to find someone with parts book to tell you proper casting part number for TA and non TA rearend.

As I said before the quick method is that frame along engine Non TA W6 will have a one piece casting including clutch housing to front of tractor. TA W6 will have chanel iron frame along side engine just like a Farmall.

I don't have much knowledge of this series of tractors but I think what Hugh might he heading toward is to determine if it is a 1954 tractor in which case it could have a TA. Check your major castings for a "Z" casting code which would indicate it is a 1954 which a possible TA.
