can the cam and bearings be replace in a 407dt without pulling the engine out of the tractor. it is in an 856 and has a bad lobe making noise. thanks in advance, any help would be appreciated.

I think it would be better to pull the engine. I've seen postings on here where some cam bearings
were not aligned with the oil passages in the block when installed by their machine shop. You should replace the lifters too. Hal

W.burrow I don't see how you can get the back one out, you have to drive the old ones out then line drive the new ones in. You do have to line drive the new bushings so they are straight. With the engine out off and the back plate off you can drive the back bushing out the back install new then put new soft plug behind back bushing to hold the oilleak. If you get the old bushing out you could drive new one to far and soft plug could leak. The other thing how would you make sure the new bushings are turned right for oil to get where it should.

You will have to figure out how to hold the lifters up off the cam to pull it out and back in.

That's easy get your self 12 cow magnets and some #9 fence wire and a lathe and drill holes in the end and then drill and tap holes in the side and thread them and use set screws to hole the wire in drop amgnet down to lifter and break the suction and use heavy rubber bands to hold two wires together in the up posision and pull the cam out. There goes another one of my secerts.

Now for that ya need to pull the engine and knock out the back plug and drop the pan to fish out the old bearings. And if you are going to replace the cam ya need to replace the cam follers ( lifters) because if ya got one lob going south then the lifter is JUNK . Never never change a cam with out lifters, the cam bearing are probable fine .

Another old trick. Get some wooden dowls about the diameter of the inside of the lifters, so they fit snug. drop them down in the hold the tops of each pair together with rubber bands. It will bind the lifter just enough that it will hold. I do think you will have to pull the engine, though.
