Just wondering if the dot on the endns of the bolts used on a 1950"s CUB is trademark thing or just part of the manufacturing?

Actually I think it was a part of the manufacturing, when the operator parted it off on the lathe it left that little dot in the middle. BUT, since IH is the only maker to have that dot, it is a trademark also.

bolts are formed from wire not pressed or forged. the dot was made in the die of the cold forming machine for identification purposes.

When did they stop the dots on the bolts and put "IH" on the bolts? My 53 Super C has the dot and my 55 100 has the IH on the bolts. Andrew

They probably started making forged bolts in 1954 for the 1955 production run, but you probably figured that was the case anyway, right?

From what I've learned from a machinist friend, I would dare guess the bolts were turned from hex stock on a lathe, either by hand or in an automated process. Newer bolts are forged in a press using round stock, I believe.
