at the dairy farm, there is a international 966 that we use to pull the mixer wagon, and i was going up a hill with the mixer and the tractor stalled on me, long story short i tried to get the parking brake in but it didnt work, and the power brakes had no power to them.. i jackknifed the tractor and no one was hurt, just ran over a t-post, anyway, now the parking brake when it is engauged, it just clicks if the tractor moves, it doesnt work like it should, is there a major teardown involved to fix this? any help is greatly appreciated!

Like Ace has said on the test but more then likely your sump check plug is not hold the hdy oil and it is draining back into the rearend . As far as the park lock there could be sever damage or just a bent link . I would have to install a spring loaded park lock if it was my tractor. But the best advice is always pick a gear that will get the job done with extra power then one that you run out of power .

If Aces theory does'nt work then you broke off the teeth on the brake itself. It will come out with the range trany cover.

Ben First things first get the brakes fixed, you should be able to slid the wheels with the manual brakes. The test to see if you have manual brakes with out engine running is. First push one peddle as far as it will go and hold it there then push the other brake peddle the first one should then move more, then do the reverse test. If the first peddle does move more when you move the second you should have manual brakes and slide the wheels. As for the park lock check the linkage from the lever to the tranny cover make sure it is good, no warn holes or bent. I would bet it has both bad holes and bet adjuster, replace and adjust so that you can not push handle over center unless the bark paw is engaged in the gear. Do this on level so you can rock the tractor to see if the bark in engaged when you push lever over center.

The brakes should work with the engine off???

None, and I mean NONE, of the '06, '56, '66 or '86 tractors I've ever driven had brakes that did anything with the engine off. I've driven at least a dozen different tractors over the years, so odds are I would've found at least one that worked properly.

Oh, and dropping the park LOCK (it's not a brake!!!) while the tractor is moving == BAD IDEA.

Oh, and if you're running out of power going up a hill, and the TA is back... PUSH THE CLUTCH FOR GOD'S SAKE! Even if you have to crawl up the hill in 1st low, or back down, it's a whole heck of a lot better than a wild ride backwards down the hill with no brakes and no steering!
