Just about time to put my Farmalls to bed

Sold my cattle on Monday and have started cleaning up the pens and thinking about geting everything ready for WINTER. Got to get the antifreeze tester out and also the stabil for the gas.

When I was a younger man I would always wait until the last minute to do these things. I guess I thought I could bluff winter into not coming. (never did win that one) Now that I have gotten older and slower I have to get started earlier or I won't be done in time to beat the freezing weather.

It must be nice to live far enough south not to have freezing weather. First frost here is forcasted for tonight so winter won't be far behind.

Put three winter projects in the shop, 123 cadet, cub, and an O6. Just incase I get these done before spring, I have others waiting their turn.

A Veterans Day Parade and a Christmas Parade are about all that is left for chances to play with the Farmalls until next spring. The spring and summer were way to short.

What do the rest of you do to get ready for winter???

I just have one "H". Check the antifreeze, put stabill in the gas, start it every couple of weeks.

My Farmalls get light oil in them and the diesels get artic fuel. The 806, 300, 1066 hydro, and the M get started every day. The 806 hauls manure every day. The 300 feeds the cows every day twice a day. M is on the mixer mill. The 1066 dosen't get started every day, unless of a snow storms.

I never drain tanks but I do turn the gas off at the tank and let them run until they quit to leave the carbs empty. They always kick right off in the sring.

I buy 500 weight steers in the spring and graze them till fall when I sell them at 800 weight feeders. Use to keep cattle year round. Now I am getting to soft to winter cattle. No tillage, No planting, No harvesting, No bailing. If I slow down any more the FSA office will probably list me as a hobby farmer

I take the pump and regulator off my sprayer and put them in the heated area of my shop, and put a blade on one of my tractors in case it snows -- haven't needed it in 2 years (western KS). I check the antifreeze occasionally, nothing else except start the tractors once or twice in the winter. No gas stabilizers, no nothing.

Yesterday I stapled plastic on the house windows while it was still nice. Today it is blustry and I have a fire in the propane heater. I never do put my Farmalls up for the winter as most of them have to earn their keep but at todays gas prices there is a couple that I am going to drian the tanks on. I know some might dissagree but this is dry country and I don't worry about condensation.

I agree with just leaving the gas in them. Anytime I drained the tank on anything I had big problems the next spring. I have never used any of that stabilizer stuff either.

Totally agree with you guys.

Blow 'em a kiss, spin on my heel and go in the house. They'll be there when needed none the worse for wear just as they were every other year of their long lives.

They are IH tractors for goodness sake, not a pet poodle. :>)

How's the pecan crop this year in Alabama? I spent 3 weeks in Huntsville back in 1981. I noticed they sell pecans at road stands like they
sell tomatoes and beans here in MD. Never saw so many pecan pies and cat fish fried. Sure was good too. It's hot and dry here. Hal
PS: I went back in Feb 1982 and I took my wife along and it was about 85 degrees. My wife called our daughter at home and she had been out shoveling snow off the driveway. I had to buy some short sleeved shirts.
