No serial # on M

My recently purchased Farmall M does not have the stamped serial # plate in place on the left side of the transmission housing (thanks Tom F. for helping me figure that out), is there another way I can confirm the actual serial # on the tractor or atleast confirm the actual year model? The guy I bought it from said it was a 1949 model, but I have found a stamped date (3-18-47)on the right side of the rear axle just below the brakes as well as some other numbers stamped in that area. Is my tractor actually a 1947 model or does this just refer to the date the axle was actually cast, since they most likely used this same axle on several if not all year models? I have found some numbers stamped in different areas of the tractor such as the head, the carb, the axles, etc. do these represent different parts codes or could one of these lead me to the actual serial number? One thing to note is the paint on the tractor is really dull on the tin as well as the motor and looks consistent from the block to the transmission to the rear axle. With 60 years of service I know its still possible things could have been swapped years ago and unnoticable now, but there is no obvious signs of major components having been swapped, i.e. a shiny bright red engine block bolted to a dull transmission. Sorry so long, any feed back would be appreciated.

Have you looked real good for the serial tag? I bought a SMTA that didn't have a tag, Other people had looked at the tractor and wouldn't buy it for that reason ,the battery was weak when I took it out of the box there was the serial tag to my suprise. For some reason it came off or was taken off and someone just stuck it in the battery box. Good luck

For some reason or another the casting codes were replaced with the actual date of manufacture in 1947 only, and I believe that this happened only on one part of the M, which is the part you have found with 3-18-47 on it. Look for the casting codes on the rest of the tractor to verify that your M is a '47, the codes should end with the letter Q. Wouldn't be unusual to find codes ending with the letter P, for 1946, because IH was using up parts from the year before.

Have seen a couple of actual dates on (torgue tube?) of H. Thought they were 1946 may have been 1947.

Judging by what you said then my M must be an 1947 year and not a 1949, unless the rear axle was replaced, which I doubt

Both axles should be the same.
Alot of right axles get replaced.

There should be a serial number stamped in the block below #4 spark plug. I have been told that number should match yur serial number, unless the engine has been rebuilt..... ..... ...

Does not match on the M, it could be close or several thousand off.

Is the #4 plug the one closest to the front or rear of the tractor.

4 is at the rear, the # will be on the block, not the head.

You will never be able to confirm the serial number without the tag. If you use the engine serial there will be at least two M's with the same serial.

There is no way to confirm the serial number of the tractor if it is missing the I.D. Tag.

the engine ser. number is by the front, #1 plug. It may or may not match the tractor ser. #, but if it's an original engine, it'll get you close, and you can check the year also.

The numbers are from front to back 1234 the numbers on this boss are tiny and may need cleaning to see.
Good luck JimN
