Maybe a super dumb question.

Could I safely store a tractor for the winter,(about 6 months) by covering the gas tank fill hole with a piece of plastic held in place with a strong rubber band? This would stop evaporation and the collection of moisture. Or is this a dumb solution to a problem. I have left tractors for 5 to 6 months before without doing any thing to the fuel system.W4

Vented or not you will still get condensation. I would suggest turning the fuel off at the tank and running the engine till it quits to empty carb. Then disconnect the line at the carb and drain about 2cups of fuel when you are ready to restart. Water is heavier than fuel and goes to the bottom of the tank.

Well, a piece of plastic with a strong rubber band would simply pop off the fuel filler neck. It's tapered, and very short, so there's very little for the plastic and rubber band to grip.

Even if you could get the plastic to stay, gas expands and contracts tremendously with changes in air temperature. If you seal the tank when it's 60 degrees out, then it gets to be 20 below, that plastic will get sucked into the tank. Then if you could solve that problem, you have the possibility of pressure buildup in the tank, so the next time you open it, BLAMMO!, fuel vapor sprayed everywhere, and a possible fire.

The best thing to do is fill the tank with gas to minimize the amount of air in the tank, add the appropriate amount of StaBil to stabilize the gas, put the regular cap on, shut off the fuel valve, and simply leave it. It may not be cost effective to fill the tank, so if you can live with a little surface rust in the tank...

Fuel caps are vented and let air with it's water vapor come and go and it's always in the tank ready to condense when conditions are right. The sealed membrane sounds like a pretty good idea if some sort of material can be found that holds up. Maybe plain old Saran wrap is worth a try, I dunno!

Generally plastic and gas don't do well together. Fumes may deteriorate the plastic.
Gas caps for W4 are $4.50 at Case IH. They are designed to do just what you are talkig about.Work pretty well too!

Thanks for all the imput. Seems like I have too much time on my hands. My wife says every time I get to thinking too hard I end up getting in trouble.I told her maybe I should buy another tractor to soak up some of the down time. She gave me the "LOOK" and said the next tractor was hers!!W4

Get a bean can that about fits, squeeze it oval, and slip it on the neck. It'll stay til it rusts out.
